Taiwan is often dubbed the Hawaii of Asia, both for its dramatic landscape and its pleasant tropical climate, which makes it perfect for those seeking an outdoor escape. Our multi-active adventure unfolds in Taiwan's vibrant deep south, offering year-round sun-soaked experiences.

Your journey begins in the laid-back regional capital of Kaohsiung, the island’s second-largest city.  We’ll wander historic Cijin Island and Stand-up paddle (SUP) on atmospheric Lotus Lake, then indulge in the flavors of the bustling night market for a true taste of Kaohsiung's vibrant culture.

Hopping on our bikes we'll venture into Taiwan's 'Banana Belt' as we cycle through the idyllic backroads of Meinong, culminating in a jaw-dropping visit to Foguangshan Monastery, home to a monumental Buddha statue (one of the world's largest) that will leave you in awe.

Leaving the city behind, our journey takes us through the lush jungles of the Hengchun Peninsula, offering a thrilling ride down to the revitalizing hot springs in the Paiwan village of Damei, where we'll rest for the night.

Kenting, our base for the final days, invites us to enjoy its beachside allure, complete with shops, cafés, restaurants, and a vibrant night market. Prepare for a range of activities including, ocean-side cycling, swimming and snorkeling in crystal clear waters, river kayaking, and hiking through the enchanting coral passageways of Kenting National Park.

Food is, as always with Grasshopper Adventures, a highlight of the journey, and we’ll try some of the best culinary highlights that Taiwan has to offer, such as dumplings, night market snacks, traditional indigenous fare, super fresh sashimi, and, of course, plenty of delicious tropical fruit!

This multi-active adventure is all about soaking up the best of Taiwan's south, from the lively city scenes to the serene mountain landscapes and the stunning beauty of the sea.

What our Guests Say

Day to Day

It's the first day of our multi-active adventure, and we'll kick it off in the heart of the city. Our meeting point is at your hotel, a perfect launchpad for the day's festivities.

We'll start with a traditional lunch featuring the delectable xiaolongbao and Taiwanese dumplings. Post-lunch, we'll hop on a ferry for a short ride to Cijin Island, where we'll explore this intriguing little island on foot.

We'll wander through traditional temples, immerse ourselves in the local food markets, and, for the adventurous, hike up to the lighthouse. The reward? Stunning views of the city and Monkey Mountain, with an optional refreshing dip at the beach.

As the late afternoon sun paints the city with warm hues, we'll return to our urban haven. After checking into our hotel, the evening unveils a gastronomic wonderland at one of the city’s renowned night markets. From succulent steaks to slurp-worthy noodles, pungent stinky tofu to sweet sticky rice cakes, and a colorful array of freshly cut tropical fruit—you name it, the market has it.

We bid farewell to the city this morning, setting our sights on the quaint Hakka settlement of Meinong. Nestled at the foothills of the majestic Southern Mountains, Meinong awaits with its rich cultural tapestry.

After gearing up with a bike fitting, we'll leisurely pedal through the enchanting countryside, passing time-worn temples peeping through the greenery, expansive rice paddies stretching to the horizon, and fruit orchards painting the landscape with vibrant hues. The gentle swaying of bamboo on the hillsides provides the perfect soundtrack to our ride.

Our cycling adventure culminates at the awe-inspiring Foguangshan Monastery, a colossal and truly jaw-dropping Buddhist complex that invites us to explore on foot.

As the day winds down, we'll make our way back to Kaohsiung to get ready to head out for a fabulous dinner.

This morning, our adventure unfolds on the serene waters of Lotus Lake as we glide through its shimmering surface on stand-up paddle boards. The lake, adorned with temples, shrines, and pagodas, provides a captivating backdrop to our early morning SUP session.

After returning to dry land, we bid the city farewell and set our compass southward. Our journey takes a pause for an oceanside lunch, soaking in the coastal charm before veering inland. We'll traverse the mountains, connecting with a beautiful winding road that guides us through the lush interior of the Hengchun Peninsula.

As we kick off today's ride, expect to pedal through sleepy indigenous settlements and past historic battlefields, keeping an eye out for playful monkeys along the way. The road gradually flattens, leading us to our overnight oasis, nestled in a picturesque valley. Here, hot springs and mountain views await, providing the perfect setting for our evening rest.

For dinner, we'll sample traditional indigenous cuisine. From salted fish to wild boar with onions and an array of fresh mountain vegetables.

We'll start the morning with a scenic drive to the picturesque Hengchun Peninsula. Our destination is the stunning Baisha Beach, a tropical haven that played a role in Ang Lee's cinematic masterpiece, 'Life of Pi.' Here, the morning is yours to indulge in snorkeling, refreshing swims, or simply basking in the sun on this idyllic shore.

Following our beach escapade, a short transfer brings us to the bustling Houbihu Marina, where we'll savor a delicious and super-fresh seafood lunch. Indulge your taste buds with the flavors of the ocean before a brief transfer whisks us away to our hotel in Kenting.

The remainder of the day is yours to savor at your leisure, surrounded by the vibrant energy of this lively beach town. Whether you choose to unwind or dive into the myriad activities on offer, Kenting promises a delightful interlude in our adventure-filled journey.

After a hearty breakfast, we'll gear up to hop on our bikes to pedal north to the charming walled town of Hengchun. From there, we cut across the peninsula, traversing its diverse landscapes until we reach the rugged beauty of the East Coast.

Upon reaching the ocean, our journey takes a watery turn as we trade our pedals for paddles to kayak along a tidal river, immersing ourselves in the idyllic countryside.

A well-deserved lunch awaits us to refuel before we gear up for the final leg of our ride.

We'll cycle alongside dramatic cliffs with panoramic views down the coast to the island's southernmost tip, where the scenery unfolds in all its splendor. Our route leads us back to the lively hub of Kenting.

After breakfast, we'll journey into the rugged expanse of Kenting's National Park, where sweeping panoramas reveal the beauty of the entire peninsula. Our hike through this untamed terrain navigates uplifted coral passageways, mysterious caverns, and the presence of towering banyan trees, providing glimpses of local wildlife—monkeys, eagles, deer, and perhaps even a shy snake.

After our invigorating hike, we return to Kenting for a delightful lunch.

The remainder of the day is yours to savor—whether it's unwinding by the pool or at the beach, indulging in a bit of shopping, or exploring the vibrant night market. For those with a penchant for marine wonders, there's also the option to visit the incredible National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium.

This morning invites you to unwind and embrace leisure at your own pace—whether it's basking in the sun at the beach, indulging in the hotel's inviting pool, or treating yourself to the spa and massage facilities.

Following check-out, our journey concludes with a transfer back to Kaohsiung, marking the end of our adventure upon arrival in the city.
