Arrival Day in Kyoto

This tour extension follows on from either the  Stunning Shikoku tour or the Japan E-Bike Tour at the conclusion of which you’ll board a train to Kyoto arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. It’s just a short 5 minute taxi ride to your lovely ryokan style hotel which will be home for the coming days.

After checking in, we’ll meet in the lobby before heading out for dinner. You may also want to stroll next door to one of the city’s top-rated craft beer pubs, the Kyoto Beer Lab. Our guides have been known to use this location for their next day briefings – We should all be so lucky!

Explore Kyoto by Bike & Foot

Kyoto is such a great city to explore by bike. Wide roads and shared pathways everywhere, considerate and careful drivers, and little alleyways along canals. So you are in store for a typically fun riding day in this cycle-friendly country.

Kyoto was the capital of Japan at two separate times, and despite Japan’s love for modernization plenty of that heritage and culture still exists today. Our ride starts out along the river taking you to the north of the city where we’ll visit the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and, at certain times of the year, the iconic cherry blossom gardens. There is a stop at the Tenryuji Temple which is typical example of the ancient architecture which has endured the passage of time.

We then ride onto Ryoanji in the east, famous for its UNESCO listed zen-style garden. On the way we’ll break for a stop at Kinkakuji to take in a great view out over the city. There are lots of traditional sweets to sample along the route before we roll back into town along the Kamo River. Lunch will also be enjoyed en route.

This evening has been kept free for you to explore the incredible dining options Kyoto offers, and your guide will have plenty of suggestions for the best local eateries.

Morning in Kyoto

Your last morning in Kyoto is yours to explore as you wish. One early morning adventure we may suggest is a gentle walk through the grounds of Shimogamo-Jina, one of seventeen UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyoto and one of the city’s most sacred. The shrine complex is surrounded by the Tadasu no Mori forest, a world of green and winding streams, as well as a small shrine used to pray for beauty. The grounds are generally open at 6am and approximately 5kms north of the hotel by taxi so an early start is possible.

For those seeking something a little more active, there’s the Fushimi Inari Shrine, arguably Kyoto’s most famous attraction. Here you’ll find hiking trails that wind up the side of the mountain, with some fantastic views over the city. But these aren’t just any trails, as you ascend and descend through a seemingly endless tunnel of iconic red tori gates. There is no entry fee and it’s open 24hrs and well lit, so you can make an early start, which is also the best way to avoid crowds. A full circuit can take up to 3 hours at a leisurely pace, but you are free to walk as far as you wish and turn back.

There are of course a multitude of alternative sights to choose from in Kyoto, too many to list here, and your guide can help with other recommendations if needed. For those traveling onward by train, a taxi to Kyoto Station is easily available with the hotel happy to assist.
