The famous Inle Lake and its renowned one-leg rowing fisherman attract a lot of visitors, but most tourists stay in the northern part of the lake. Very few foreigners meander to the southern reaches of Inle, or even further to Samkar lake, where rural life rolls on at its own pace.
You’ll have the unique opportunity to immerse yourselves in the fascinating local life and natural beauty of these lakes from both the surface of the water and the shores. Life here is highly impacted by the different seasons, and we will see examples of this as we pass small villages and learn about local crafts, farming, and snack-making, which differ throughout the year. On our way we will stop in Samkar, where we will see its intriguing stupas that seem to be submerged in the lake, casting their magnificent shadows and reflected in the water below.
We will spend the night in Phaya Thaung. This small village is mostly known by locals for its monastery that is situated on a hilltop overlooking the vast lake. After a walk in the village, we will relax in our comfortable bungalows and enjoy a quiet evening with serene water views. The next morning we will make our way back to Nyaung Shwe on the other side of the lake. We will stop at a private house for lunch and unique cultural experience as we devour a traditional Shan lunch. Refueled by the tasty local food, we will set out on kayaks and discover the famous floating villages as we paddle between stilt houses before we get back to Nyaung Shwe by boat.
