Take in the majestic highland town of Dalat from your bike, see the misty pine forest and then descend to the coast where life in the fishing villages goes on as it has for generations. Ride the picturesque coastline all the way to the UNESCO World Heritage Heritage-listed town of Hoi An and experience a side of Vietnam unknown to most travelers. All of this active fun is packed into a seven day cycling holiday with minimal time in the car.
A short flight takes us to Dalat where we check out the colonial-era architecture as well as more modern additions. After enjoying cycling through the temperate highlands, we descend to the subtropical environment of the coast, where we ride through the farming and fishing towns to Hoi An.
The Vietnamese coastline is made up of a picturesque variety of windy roads around headlands and sand dunes where colorful fishing boats bob at their moorings. Finish your ride in the world heritage listed town of Hoi An, full of historical significance, amazing food, and a lovely beach- the perfect reward for your active adventure.
Apart from a couple of days that are just a touch short of 100km, the riding is achievable for anyone who cycles regularly as a commuter or recreationally on weekends. Most of the roads are paved back roads with minimal traffic. We encounter only a couple of dirt roads and these are not hard riding at all. There are often sea breezes to keep the temperature down a little. There are a few other small hills, but we always return to sea level, so the up is a nice trade-off for the down.

Explore the mystical town of Dalat by bike as you pedal past waterfalls and through the pine forest shrouded in mist.
Visit local village industries such as mat weaving and rice paper making for a cultural experience.
Pedal through small fishing villages filled with fresh fish markets and friendly locals before taking a boat to Hoi An.
Enjoy the fresh flavors of Vietnamese cuisine along the way, including tasty fish straight from the sea.
We start off with a morning flight from Saigon to Dalat. After lunch and a briefing, we take to our bikes to explore. Dalat is a town full of character, and a great place to start our adventure. This hilltown was popular with the French during colonial times due to the climate but has since become even more well-known among middle-class Saigon folk who head for the romantic cool of the hills. The area is also known for some of the best coffee in Asia, a great way to fuel the day’s ride. We’ll start with an exploration of Dalat, cycling on sealed roads and unsealed trails through beautiful pine forests, flower gardens and coffee plantations.
Today we are in for a great ride as we pedal our way from the highlands to the sea. Enjoy cycling both ascents and descents along quiet secondary roads that eventually lead all the way to sea level. We drive some of the distance to ensure we arrive in Nha Trang with time to spare for lounging on the beach or perhaps sampling excellent craft beer at local brew pubs that have popped up.
It's a day off the bikes today to rest our legs, with the morning free to explore Nha Trang, relax by the pool or along the beach, or to try your hand at one of the many activities along the waterfront.
After lunch, we board the train for a fun, easy-going journey by rail up the coast. This is a much more relaxed way to travel than by road. Make sure you look out the window to catch the beaches, villages, rice fields and mountains we pass slowly by! Most of the other passengers are Vietnamese and the buffet car is a good place to strike up some conversations with the locals. We arrive in Quy Nhon in the early evening, transfer to our hotel and then enjoy dinner in town.
The coastal section of the cycling journey begins today as we leave Quy Nhon on a quiet back road along a sand dune peninsula with great views back over the bay and the mountains. We see lots of coast today as we undulate along the well-made road with friendly villagers waving and cheering us on as we pedal by. We take a short drive at the end of the day to get us into the tiny village of Tam Quan.
A varied and highly enjoyable day lies ahead of us. We spend the morning riding along the coast, then head inland to take in an array of new scenery.
We’ll pedal down some quiet roads, then ride along a railway road and pass farmers tending to rice fields and looking after water buffalo. Our home for the night is Quang Ngai, a small city of little note. Even so, the comfortable hotel, nice river view and a swimming pool make Quang Ngai a pleasant place to stay.
We start today with a visit to one of Vietnam's more sobering sites, the My Lai Massacre Memorial. It was here that the tragic massacre occurred that, once exposed, caused a turning point in American public opinion to the American-Vietnam war. Back on your bike again we'll weave our way through the coastal villages. If the local artisans are working today we'll stop to visit a bamboo basket workshop, this is a traditional form of industry that is now much harder to find in cities, but here in the village, the skills are still very much in use. We enjoy a lunch of the freshest seafood possible and stay in the town of Tam Ky.
Today will be a highlight of your cycling on this tour. First, we’ll park our bikes at the hero mother statue for an insight into the past. The hero mother in question was a lady who lost 11 sons, her husband and her grandson to the American-Vietnam conflict. This story underscores the terrible losses suffered by all people involved in the war. From here, we ride dirt roads through sleepy fishing villages with friendly faces popping out to say hello. Duck and chicken farms are also present through today, so we can stop and learn a little about this particular means of income generation. We then take a boat ride to reach Hoi An, a fitting way to enter this ancient port town and to conclude our adventure.
Quality, well maintained GT mountain bikes in a full range of sizes are included in your tour, fitted with full hydraulic brakes, hybrid tires for touring. Handlebar bags for your personal possessions and comfortable saddles are also provided, with a women's specific version available.
Simple to use and a pleasure to ride, the Trek Conduit+ pedal-assist bike expands touring possibilities for all riders, and anything that enables people to explore more of the world by bike is a great thing in our books! Find out more about our E-Bikes here.

The hotels we use are a great, and sometimes unexpected, part of this tour. In the larger cities and established tourist centers we use stylish and supremely comfortable hotels and resorts, while in the smaller and more out of the way areas we stay in the best available accommodation, which is often simple yet always well run, clean and comes with air-conditioning and a private bathroom.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very knowledgeable, and charming. For tours of 7+ people, an assistant guide will accompany the group to allow for flexibility and ensure attention to service & detail.
Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local guides who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country and will help you to connect with the villagers you meet along the way. They will also keep your safety and comfort top priorities at all times.
An air-conditioned backup support vehicle is always available in case you want a break from riding, and to carry your luggage.
The international profile of Vietnamese food has increased over the last two decades with very good reason. A cuisine that has evolved with the culture and landscape of Vietnam provides for an astounding level of variety from south to north. Each town and city has its own subtle twist on iconic dishes and some of their own creations. Our leaders are passionate about their food and look forward to taking you on a culinary adventure in unison with your cycling adventure. Included meals are listed in the day by day itinerary, and drinking water is always included with meals. Any soft or alcoholic drinks are not included and will be at your own expense.
Energy bars and local snacks are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water and electrolyte drinks are always available to keep you well hydrated.
A beautiful souvenir Grasshopper cycling jersey is yours to wear and take home. We also provide a Grasshopper drink bottle as an extra memento.

This was a 7 day cycling trip with Grasshopper Adventures flying from Ho Chi Minh to Dalat to start our cycle and ending up in Hoi An. What an adventure! We both agreed it was the best trip we had ever been on. Our guides, Nguyen and Vu were fabulous and made the trip, Nguyen was full of energy and a joy to spend time with each day - his knowledge and passion for his country shone through and we had a lot of fun whilst seeing the real Vietnam and tasting the amazing food in each place we visited. We couldn't fault any part of the trip and will definitely be booking again with Grasshopper for another tour.
Dalat to Hoi An - 411 Km. Ange and I traveled from NZ for a behind the scenes experience through Vietnam. Wow! What an amazing tour. It took 6 days and saw and experienced amazing people, sites, history lessons and food. Ky was our guide...Ky is very knowledgeable and very kind.
We biked through villages, the coastal highway, through rice fields and back streets and alleys of towns. I would highly recommend this tour, you will need to enjoy cycling as there were a few long days but well worth the effort. We will return with our four children so they too can experience this beautiful country.
P.S the people here are so lovely, generous and happy. We felt no animosity at all, but kindness. Thank you Grasshopper and thank you Ky!
I had a blast with Ky on the Highlands & Coast of Vietnam provided by Grasshopper Tours! If you want an authentic cultural experience, the chance to get off the beaten path, while also enjoying amazing culinary treats, this trip is one to consider. I got such a great sense of the culture, landscape and history of Vietnam through this trip and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys an active adventure.
Cycling through Vietnam with Grasshopper was truly one of my best experiences yet. The trip far exceeded my expectations in every way. I was very impressed with our local guides and support crew. They were on top of every detail and made the trip so fun. I highly recommend Grasshopper Adventures!
We had a fantastic time on the Grasshopper Adventures Highlands and Coast of Vietnam tour we took in January of 2019. Our guide and leader Nguyen was OUTSTANDING! He was incredibly knowledgeable about all the places we rode through and visited, extremely personable and friendly, spoke perfect English and really came to understand each of the people in our group. Plus he was an outstanding cyclist and athlete. We were also supported by a great mechanic Hoan and drivers Fu and Hy.
The tour was an excellent chance to see Vietnam in great detail and experience the beautiful countryside. The Vietnamese people are incredibly friendly and we loved getting a chance to see and meet them up close.
The logistics were also very good, with some excellent hotels, great restaurants and thoroughly comfortable bikes. Nguyen led us at a very good pace and even the longest days did not overly challenge us. There were a couple of long uphill climbs but even those were manageable with well-timed breaks and rest stops. And there was always plenty of authentic Vietnamese food, and water and snacks whenever we stopped.
So many fabulous experiences on this trip. We highly recommend it!

The cycling was challenging, but the scenery made you forget about all the effort you were exerting. The local villages and villagers where both beautiful and charming. The staff and my tour mates made the whole experience just that - an experience of a lifetime.
Grasshopper is yet another reason I always choose a local company when I book a foreign tour. The routes are well thought out, tour guides fluent in the local language and customs, and I think we are better received by our host country. This tour could not have been designed by merely checking out a map, rather someone familiar with the local terrain was obviously behind the route planning, hotel and meal selection
