Looking for a more interesting way to reach the islands of Thailand? Why not take the slow road and cycle with us on this achievable bike ride that follows the southern coastline, taking back roads and traveling through National Parks. Along the way, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to connect with locals and experience authentic Thai culture. This achievable ride has something for everybody. So much better than flying and missing all those interesting places along the way!
210 Km riding. This is a predominantly flat ride (with only a few small hills) on back roads so it is achievable by anyone who can ride a bike for the distances involved - and if not just jump in the air-conditioned support vehicle for a rest. We take a slow and relaxed pace so this trip is well suited to fit riders looking for a relaxing ride or those new to cycle touring who are looking to find out what it's all about. We do spend two very short sections of less than 10km each on the main highway, but if you don't feel comfortable with this just jump in the support van for these bits.
Pedal-assist E-bike is an available option for this tour for $140 surcharge.
Pedal past the craggy limestone karsts of Sam Roi Yot National Park and keep your eyes peeled for monkeys!
Along the way, enjoy the world-renowned flavors of Thai cuisine.
The endpoint of our ride puts you in the perfect position to take a ferry to the island of your choice.
After pick up from your hotel in Bangkok it is a 2-3 hour transfer to Hua Hin, the start of our ride. Today offers an easy ride following back roads through small towns and cycling along quiet coastline. In Pranburi, we stay in a comfortable resort right on the coast, well away from the bustle of Bangkok where you started the day.
More quiet back roads and beaches await on this great day of riding. We start out by transferring a short distance from the hotel and board a boat for a visit to a beautiful cave in which sits, a shrine that is highlighted by a shard of sunlight most mornings. Then we start cycling and have the pleasure of riding through the stark limestone mountains of Sam Roi Yot National Park. If you are really lucky you might spot monkeys hanging onto the rocks. We have lunch on the edge of Prachuap Khiri Khan, the provincial capital, then we ride onwards, through an Air Force base to reach a small fishing village, Khlong Wan where a comfortable little hotel by the water awaits.
After enjoying breakfast by the sea, we take a quick side trip by van back into the Air Force base to visit some cheeky characters. These are the colony of Langur Monkeys who call the base home. After visiting the monkeys, we take to the bikes and pedal through the narrowest part of Thailand - only 11km wide - the ridge to our right marks the border with Myanmar. Today we ride on a mix of sealed and unsealed roads, passing charming fishing villages on the way to Ban Krut and another lovely resort on the coast.
Today's ride will take us alongside more beautiful coastline and beaches but also through plantations of fruit and rubber. We'll make a stop at one rubber plantation to learn about the long process of extracting the tree sap to turning it into car tires and condoms. The ride ends at lunch and then we transfer to Chumphon, just north of the main town and ferry where we enjoy a last night on the Thai mainland.
An early start is required this morning to make it in time for the ferry to the island of your choice: Ko Tao, Koh Phangan or Koh Samui. When you arrive at the island we will have a transfer arranged to take you to your hotel. If you would like to return to Hua Hin or Bangkok we can transfer you in our support vehicle.
The Cannondale Quick 1 Disc bikes are fixed fork (no suspension), flat handlebar hybrid bikes with mid-width fast-rolling tires and hydraulic discs for braking confidence. A reliable and performance geared Shimano 105 drivetrain and class-leading weight make this a great bike for lightweight cycle touring and perfectly suited to Thailand.
The Cannondale Trail Neo is a durable, high quality and supremely comfortable e-bike. It features a power pack and drive unit from Bosch and is equipped with 10 speed Shimano gearing with plenty of range for all conditions. The hydraulic disc brakes prevent any braking fatigue in your hands and front suspension prevents any wrist pain that can occur with e-bikes due to their slightly different weight distribution. It's a great looking bike too, with a battery that is integrated into the frame and a nice, subtle color scheme. The bikes come in S, M & L, so will suit riders from 165cm to 186cm in height.
The hotels we use are a great, and sometimes unexpected, part of this tour. In the larger cities and established tourist centers, we use stylish and supremely comfortable hotels and resorts, while in the smaller and more out of the way areas the hotels are comfortable, well run and usually have character and charm in abundance, but they are not star-rated hotels as one might find in the tourist areas of Thailand.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very knowledgeable, and charming. For tours of 7+ people, an assistant guide will accompany the group to allow for flexibility and ensure attention to service & detail.
Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local guides who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country and will help you to connect with the villagers you meet along the way. They will also keep your safety and comfort top priorities at all times.
An air-conditioned backup support vehicle is always available in case you want a break from riding, and to carry your luggage.
Thai food is internationally famous, and for good reason. This trip is as much about food as riding with all the best of Thai food provided throughout the trip. Included meals are listed in the day by day itinerary, and drinking water is always included with meals. Any soft or alcoholic drinks are not included and will be at your own expense.
Energy bars and local snacks are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water and electrolyte drinks are always available to keep you well hydrated.

The location of this resort couldn’t be better, with the beach on one side and Sam Roi Yot National Park on the other. Kids will love taking a dip in one of the resort’s 10 swimming pools, while the whole family will soak up the tranquil atmosphere from within a picturesque coconut grove.
The goal of this resort is to make you happy, and they certainly succeed! The friendly staff will make your family feel right at home as you stay in spacious, comfortable rooms and enjoy a large swimming pool and some relaxation on the beach.
Get closer to nature in a harmonious, natural environment as you stay on Bankrut Beach in this beautiful, detail-oriented resort. Stay in luxurious rooms and swim in a large pool surrounded by picturesque nature, then take a short walk to the beach at this relaxing accommodation.
Cruising the Coast to Samui was the highlight of our 3 week trip to Thailand. Our Guide, driver of the support van, food, accommodations, bikes, and pre-trip administration were excellent. We travelled through beauty countryside and along the coastline, experiencing many parts of Thailand that most visitors don't get to see. We would highly recommend Grasshopper tours and if you are lucky you would have the pleasure of having Tick for your guide.
My family has just returned from a 5 day family bike trip down the coast of Thailand from Bangkok to Koh Samui. The trip was fantastic and my two teenage boys considered it the highlight of our trip to SE Asia. If you want to see a beautiful part of Thailand and have a great adventure along the way I highly recommend this trip.
What a great way to experience Thailand! Travelling by bike allowed us to be immersed with the people, culture and landscape. The trip was well organised and we loved the fact that all we had to do was just hop on our bikes and ride- everything else was taked care of. Our guide, Tick, was really friendly and knowledgeable and was great company. Would highly recommend this trip.
Kan's tour leader skills are excellent, but outshone by his ability to pick out the best local foods to provide a gourmet experience.
This was the fifth trip I have completed with Grasshopper, and once again the level of service was outstanding. The Guide was HIGHLY professional - informed and informative, and made sure everyone had a good time. The scenery, food, accommodation and "local colour" were all memorable and outstanding. And - as always - the level of service provided by Grasshopper was stunning, from the quality of the bikes, the design of the route, the support offered by staff, to the little things such as providing us with cash at the end to buy "VIP seating" on the final ferry trip, and being met at the wharf and taken to our various hotels.
