Giant Fastroad or E-bike

Taiwan’s deep south is perfectly suited to a family ride, with great weather around the year, and huge diversity in spite of its small size. Our journey takes full advantage of this and includes everything from remote mountain roads, to beaches, hot springs, indigenous villages and even an aquarium. Distances are short enough that there is also plenty of time to soak up the experience and take part in a host of other optional activities, from snorkeling and surfing to kayaking or a jeep ride.
The ride begins in Donggang after a ride from Kaohsiung, and we’ll explore the area around Taiwan’s coral island before the cycling adventure begins. From there, we’ll pedal through indigenous communities and hot springs then on towards Kenting, where we’ll have a day to explore and hike through the Kenting National Park before heading back to Kaohsiung where the adventure began. Along the way there will be plenty of activities, sights, smells and sounds to keep everyone in the family captivated.
90 km riding. For the most part we ride on small country roads with minimal traffic, although there are short stretches on busier roads (which have designated cycle/scooter lanes) near Kenting town.
Pedal assist E-bikes are an available option on this tour for $275 surchage.
Take a ferry ride to Xiao Liuqui where you can snorkel this gorgeous coral island and look around for turtles!
Cycle across the mountains and into the jungle of the Hengchun peninsula to our accommodation in a valley with mountain views.
Visit one of Asia’s best aquariums before a memorable swim at Baisha Beach.
Hike Kenting National Park through coral passageways and caverns as you spot wildlife.
Today you’ll be collected from your Kaohsiung hotel (or airport or HSR station) and we’ll then make the short transfer from Kaohsiung to Donggang where we’ll explore the amazing local fresh produce market before catching a ferry to lovely Xiao Liuqiu. In the afternoon, we’ll have a chance to explore, stopping at beaches, temples and unusual rock formations as well as snorkeling the crystal clear waters around Taiwan’s only coral island. Famed for its abundance of friendly sea turtles, Xiao Liuqiu also offers a myriad of other fish and coral species and we’ll also learn a little about the problems facing the marine environment before returning to our hotel for some downtime and maybe a swim in the pool.
This morning the ferry takes us back to the Taiwanese mainland from where we transfer south, and then east across the mountains to connect with a beautiful little road which winds its way down through the jungle interior of the Hengchun peninsula. This is where we’ll start today’s ride and along the way, we’ll pedal through sleepy indigenous settlements and historic battlefields while trying to spot the monkeys. The road flattens out and brings us to our overnight rest-stop, nestled in a picturesque valley, complete with hot springs and mountain views. In the evening we’ll have the chance to sample traditional indigenous cuisine.
Today we ride from the door, back towards the ocean, following the contours of the west coast on a lovely quiet road with plenty of diversions, including one of Asia’s best aquariums. We’ll spend a couple of hours exploring this incredible aquarium before jumping back on our bikes and pedaling on to beautiful Baisha Beach (which featured in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi) where there’s the chance for a swim before a fantastic seafood lunch at Houbihu Marina. We end today in Kenting, home to some of Taiwan’s best beaches. In the evenings a lively night market sets up along Kenting’s main thoroughfare that is worth an exploration.
After breakfast, we’ll continue our ride all the way to the island’s southernmost tip before rounding the coast and cycling our way along dramatic cliffs with spectacular views up the coast. We end our ride in the rugged surf village of Jialeshui, where there are numerous adventurous activities on offer, ranging from kayaking and jeep rides, to surfing, or just exploring the otherworldly coastal rock formations. Tonight is free to explore the culinary delights and shopping on offer in Kenting.
This morning we’ll head up into Kenting’s rugged national park which offers fantastic views of the whole peninsula. We’ll hike through uplifted coral passageways, eerie caverns and past giant banyans, possibly spotting monkeys, eagles, deer and even snakes. After our hike, we’ll return to the hotel to freshen up and then have a final lunch together before making the drive back to Kaohsiung where the tour ends (approximately 3 pm). For those who want to stay longer in Kenting, we can arrange additional accommodation at our lovely tour hotel, plus a range of activities.

The island’s unique cultural and geographic diversity means that mealtimes are always a culinary adventure in Taiwan. The Pacific's rich bounty gives ample opportunity to sample super-fresh seafood, which the Japanese influence has nurtured into a love for sushi, whilst on terra firma the East Rift Valley is home to some of the island’s finest tropical fruit orchards producing dragonfruit, grapefruit, mangoes, oranges, papaya, pomelos and pineapples to name but a few. In the cities, everything is available around the clock, but in remote areas meals typically consist of two or three meat and fish dishes, two or three vegetable dishes, plus staples of rice or noodles, with fruit to finish. Meat dishes are usually chicken or pork, but beef, lamb, boar and other more exotic choices are sometimes on offer. Beer is available almost everywhere, but good wine is more difficult to find. We are experienced in catering to picky eaters and will take care of all dietary requirements. Included meals are listed in the day by day itinerary, and drinking water is always included with meals. Any soft or alcoholic drinks are not included and will be at your own expense.
Energy bars and local snacks are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water and electrolyte drinks are always available to keep you well hydrated.
A beautiful souvenir Grasshopper cycling jersey is yours to wear and take home. We also provide a Grasshopper drink bottle as an extra memento.
