Discover Hiroshima & Onomichi
Enjoy an extra 2-nights in the charming bayside town of Onomichi with days exploring the highlights of Hiroshima Prefecture, before setting out on our two-wheeled adventure of Shikoku Island. Onomichi is a quaint, hillside port city overlooking the Seto Sea, with narrow lanes, winding roads and photogenic layered buildings. It’s the perfect place to experience the simple living that characterizes small Japanese towns.
Only one hour away by train is the town of Hiroshima with it’s somber memorials to that day in 1945 when an atomic bomb changed the course of history. There is much to see and learn of past and present Japan on this two day extension to Onomichi and the Hiroshima memorial site, making it the perfect prelude to your longer cycle tour through the country.
2 Days / 2 Nights
Day to Day itinerary
Welcome to Onomichi
Onomichi although not instantly familiar to most first-time visitors is easily reached from the main entry points of Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka via Shinkansen bullet trains to Fukuyama, followed by a short onward local rail connection. A mear two-minute walk from the station and you arrive at our hotel for the next two nights.
We encourage you to arrive early today and check in to our centrally located hotel. You can store your luggage with the hotel if you are early for check in and set out to explore parts of this charming town on your own. One suggestion is a stroll the waterfront jetty with it’s many shops and outdoor restaurants. There’s even a Giant bike shop nearby for any last-minute cycling needs you may have forgotten.
Mid-afternoon we’ll gather in the hotel lobby for introductions before heading off to the nearby cable car, taking us to the highest point above the town and site of the Senkoji Park Observatory as well as the imposing modern City Art Museum. The walk back to town leads past many of the 25 temples along the Temple Walk which Onomichi is well known for, and offers a taste of the city’s stunning vistas and charming small-town feel. Dinner tonight will be at one of Onomichi’s restaurants that’s known throughout Japan for its unique ramen.
An early breakfast will get us started before waking to the railway station for the one hour train journey to Hiroshima. Today’s tour offers a sobering insight into the absolute devastation of that day in history, August 6, 1945, and the subsequent rebirth of the city. At the center of the city is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, an area dedicated to the legacy of Hiroshima.
The Atomic Bomb Dome is a key landmark in the city, which sat just 160 meters from the epicenter of the bomb blast and still stands today. The metal framework of the building remained intact when the bomb exploded directly overhead and the building, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands almost exactly as it did after the bomb. It remains as both a memorial and a symbol of peace. The Peace Memorial Museum nearby details the events leading to the dropping of the bomb and the devastating aftermath. It’s truly one of the most thought provoking sites to be visited anywhere in the world.
The train ride back to Onomichi offers time to reflect on the day’s experience. Lunch will be served in town before our return. We’ll walk from the station back to our hotel. For dinner tonight you are free to explore the town on your own and your Grasshopper guide can assist with ideas and suggestions according to your tastes.
Sunrise over Onomichi – Start Riding!
For early risers the pathway back up to the Observatory offers a spectacular viewing of sunrise over the Seto Sea and is a nice way to farewell the city. Back at the hotel we’ll take breakfast and prepare for the mid-morning start of your bike adventure, starting from the seaside promenade of the hotel.
