The hotels we use are a great, and sometimes unexpected, part of this tour. In the larger cities and established tourist centres we use stylish and supremely comfortable hotels and resorts, while in the smaller and more out of the way areas we stay in the best available accommodation, which is often simple yet always well run, clean and comes with air-conditioning and a private bathroom.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very well informed, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local leaders who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country and will help you to connect with the villagers you meet along the way.
For groups of 5+ people a bike mechanic will join the group. Whilst not a master of linguistics, our technical team always make an effort to form a bond with the group and provide not just mechanical support, but additional encouragement to those who may find themselves at the back of the group. Our drivers support the group by ensuring that the freshest fruit and tastiest snacks are picked up along the way.
An air conditioned backup support vehicle is always available in case you want a break from riding, and to carry your luggage.
The international profile of Vietnamese food has increased over the last two decades with very good reason. A cuisine that has evolved with the culture and landscape of Vietnam provides for an astounding level of variety from south to north. Each town and city has its own subtle twist on iconic dishes and some of their own creations. Our leaders are passionate about their food and look forward to taking you on a culinary adventure in unison with your cycling adventure. Included meals are listed in the day by day itinerary, and drinking water is always included with meals. Any soft or alcoholic drinks are not included and will be at your own expense.
Energy bars and local snacks are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water and electrolyte drinks are always available to keep you well hydrated.
A beautiful souvenir Grasshopper cycling jersey is yours to wear and take home. We also provide a Grasshopper drink bottle as an extra memento.

for Highlands & Coast of Vietnam
Fly to Dalat, Day Ride
We start off with a morning flight from Saigon to Dalat. After lunch and a briefing, we take to our bikes to explore. Dalat is a town full of character, and a great place to start our adventure. This hilltown was popular with the French during colonial times due to the climate, but has since become even more well-known among middle-class Saigon folk who head for the romantic cool of the hills. The area is also known for some of the best coffee in Asia, a great way to fuel the day’s ride. We’ll start with an exploration of Dalat, cycling on sealed roads and unsealed trails through beautiful pine forests, flower gardens and coffee plantations.
Cycle from the Highlands to Nha Trang
Today we are in for a great ride as we make our way from the highlands to the sea. Enjoy cycling both ascents and descents along quiet secondary roads that eventually lead all the way to sea level. We drive some of the distance to ensure we arrive in Nha Trang with time to spare for lounging on the beach or perhaps sampling excellent craft beer at local brewpubs that have popped up.
Train to Quy Nhon
It's a day off the bikes today to rest our legs, with the morning free to explore Nha Trang, relax by the pool or along the beach, or to try your hand at one of the many activities along the waterfront.
After lunch we board the train for a fun, easy-going journey by rail up the coast. This is a much more relaxed way to travel than by road. Make sure you look out the window to catch the beaches, villages, rice fields and mountains we pass slowly by! Most of the other passengers are Vietnamese and the buffet car is a good place to strike up some conversations with the locals. We arrive in Quy Nhon in the early evening, transfer to our hotel and then enjoy dinner in town.
Cycle the Coast to Tam Quan
The coastal section of the cycling journey begins today as we leave Quy Nhon on a quiet back road along a sand dune peninsula with great views back over the bay and the mountains. We see lots of coast today as we undulate along the well-made road with friendly villagers waving and cheering us on as we pedal by. We take a short drive at the end of the day to get us into the tiny village of Tam Quan.
Cycle Inland to Quang Ngai
A varied and highly enjoyable day lies ahead of us. We spend the morning riding along the coast then head inland to see an array of new scenes. Challenge yourself by climbing some hills today as we cross rivers on small wooden bridges and pass farmers tending to rice fields and water buffalo. Our home for the night is Quang Ngai, a small city of little note. Even so, the comfortable hotel, nice river view and an abundance of cold drinks make Quang Ngai a pleasant place to stay.
Pedal the Coast to Tam Ky
We start today with a visit to one of Vietnam's more sobering sites, the My Lai Massacre Memorial. It was here that the tragic massacre occurred that, once exposed, caused a turning point in American public opinion to the American-Vietnam war. From here we continue on two wheels along the coast and visit a rice paper maker and a mat weaver along the way. Both are traditional forms of industry that are harder to find in cities, but here in the village, the skills are still very much in use. We enjoy a lunch of the freshest seafood possible and stay this evening in a delightful small-scale hotel.
Cycle Fishing Villages & Boat to Hoi An
Today’s ride is one of the highlights of the trip. We start with a visit to a fresh market where the fish come straight out of the South China Sea and into the baskets at these stands. The vendors will be just as interested in you as you are in their products and will be more than happy to pose for a photo, a real novelty in this well off-the-beaten-path location. We ride dirt roads through sleepy fishing villages with friendly faces popping out to say hello. Next comes a boat ride to reach Hoi An, a fitting way to enter this ancient port town and to conclude our adventure.
What's the Riding Like?
Mostly flat terrain
6 days riding
This tour is rated 'Moderate' for difficulty. Apart from a couple of days that are just a touch short of 100km, the riding is achievable for anyone who rides regularly as a commuter or recreationally on the weekends. Most of the roads are paved back roads with minimal traffic. We encounter only a couple of dirt roads and these are not hard riding at all. There are often sea breezes to keep the temperature down a little. There are a few other small hills, but we always return to sea level, so the up is a nice trade-off for the down. There is a support vehicle on hand at all times so if you need a break or a lift up the hill just jump in the van and relax.
Being 1650km from north to south Vietnam's seasons vary across the country, making it a year round destination. This also means that you will probably encounter some rain if you are travelling extensively, regardless of your month of travel.
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi & Ha Giang) is cold in the winter months (Nov-Mar), and can be damp and misty, although there are also beautifully sunny days at this time of year.
The central region (Hoi An, Hue & Nha Trang) is wettest from September to December with occasional typhoons, which can occasionally disrupt travel.
The south experiences the regular Southeast Asian monsoon between June and October, with dry sunny weather from November to April. December and January are the coolest months with temperatures rising during April and May leading to the onset of the rains.

What our guests tell us...
Don't take our word for it, listen to what guests say about our tours!
This was a 7 day cycling trip with Grasshopper Adventures flying from Ho Chi Minh to Dalat to start our cycle and ending up in Hoi An. What an adventure! We both agreed it was the best trip we had ever been on. Our guides, Nguyen and Vu were fabulous and made the trip, Nguyen was full of energy and a joy to spend time with each day - his knowledge and passion for his country shone through and we had a lot of fun whilst seeing the real Vietnam and tasting the amazing food in each place we visited. We couldn't fault any part of the trip and will definitely be booking again with Grasshopper for another tour.
We took two trips with Grasshopper Adventures...a weeklong trip from Dalat to Hoi An was terrific due both to how well they were planned and the friendliness and professionalism of the leaders … Biking is a great way to see any country and especially Vietnam.
Dalat to Hoi An - 411 Km. Ange and I traveled from NZ for a behind the scenes experience through Vietnam. Wow! What an amazing tour. It took 6 days and saw and experienced amazing people, sites, history lessons and food. Ky was our guide...Ky is very knowledgeable and very kind. We biked through villages, the coastal highway, through rice fields and back streets and alleys of towns. I would highly recommend this tour, you will need to enjoy cycling as there were a few long days but well worth the effort. We will return with our four children so they too can experience this beautiful country. P.S the people here are so lovely, generous and happy. We felt no animosity at all, but kindness. Thank you Grasshopper and thank you Ky!
Riding through the countryside and small villages was especially fun, with children cheering and slapping high fives as if we were in the Tour de France. Very interesting stops along the way … Two thumbs-up all the way around!!
