for Bridge Over the River Kwai
Transfer to Kanchanaburi, Cycle Beside the Death Railway
After picking you up from your hotel in Bangkok it is a 2-3 hour transfer to Kanchanaburi and the famous 'Bridge Over The River Kwai.' After walking across the bridge to the quieter side of the river, we set up the bikes and begin riding. Today takes us on a very pleasant ride that first follows the course of the river, with a stop at a war cemetery. After a short uphill we leave the bikes to squeeze through a cave that sits in the grounds of a local temple. The remainder of the day is through farmland with everything from common crops like corn, rice and sugar cane to small patches of asparagus and chillies. Late in the ride we find ourselves riding alongside the very train tracks that were laid decades before by prisoners of war. At the end of the ride we transfer to our beautiful accommodation at the Boutique Raft Resort. Meals: LD
Cycle to Hellfire Pass 29km & Ride the Train
Starting the morning on bikes, we cycle small roads that slowly get narrower and eventually turn to dirt as we head into a beautiful forested landscape. The finale to the ride is a suspension bridge back to the land of sealed roads. The support van will then drive us up the hill to Hellfire Pass, where we spend some time visiting the excellent museum and walk along the infamous Hellfire Pass. From here a short drive brings us to Nam Tok train station, the modern day end of the train line that used to go all the way to Myanmar. Here we'll take a ride on the Death Railway, travelling along a piece of WWII history. After crossing the trestle bridge at Krasae Cave, we transfer back to our hotel. Meals: BLD
Cycle to Muang Sing Ruins & Transfer to Bangkok
From the resort this morning, we ride a series of small sealed and unsealed roads that wind their way around villages and farmland. After a short section on the main road and a bit of an uphill climb, we descend back towards the river and make a visit to the Angkor era ruins at Muang Sing. This region marks the furthest point west that the great Cambodian Empire once spread. After visiting the ruins it is a further 15km to the end of our ride, a late lunch, and the start of the 3 hour drive back to your hotel in Bangkok. During the transfer you can reflect on three adventurous days, cycling terrain made famous for its bridge and railway line but with a whole lot more to see than just war history. Meals: BL

What's the Riding Like?
Some small hills
3 days riding
This tour is on a mix of sealed and unsealed roads so we ride mountain bikes with knobbly tyres. You need to be comfortable with some bumpy surfaces but anyone who is comfortable riding a bike should be ok. There are some small short hills to get up and roll down. The distances are all quite short so there is never any rush if you worry about being slow and we always have a support vehicle on hand in case you need to take a break from the cycling.
Coolest time: Nov-Feb
Wettest time: Jun-Oct
Dec-Jan & Jul-Aug
Central, North & Northeast Thailand
This region of Thailand has three seasons: 'the cool', 'the hot' and 'the wet'. November to February is cool and dry (sometimes even chilly in the far north), with temperatures starting to rise in March to reach a peak in late April and May. The onset of the rains, in late May, helps to bring temperatures down, with showers being generally heavy but short.
While without doubt the best riding conditions are during the coolest part of the year (December & January), Thailand is at its most beautiful at the height of the rains (July & August) when the fields are a vibrant emerald green and the rice paddies full of water.
What our guests tell us...
Just a selection of our great reviews!
We did the “Bridge over River Kwai” bike tour with our 13-year-old son. We had a blast!!! Our guide Kan was the best. He was very friendly & accommodating. He made our bike tour fun and memorable. We will surely cycle again with you :)
It was the highlight of our 2 week vacation in Thailand. Travelled through rural areas and off the tourist trail. Snacks, meals and accommodation were spot on. Fantastic trip.
The 3 days River Kwai tour lived up to the very high standard we have come to expect from Grasshopper and was thoroughly enjoyed by myself and boys aged 19 and 9
Went on the River Kwai three day adventure in a small group and had great fun. Highly recommended - Tick is an excellent tour leader and his support team with two vans were excellent. The hotel on the river was an experience in itself.
