For our Family Tours in Thailand we provide perfectly maintained Merida mountain bikes in all sizes. Hybrid tires for touring, powerful Hydraulic brakes, lockout suspension for the smooth surface and handlebar bags to carry personal items. We have kids bikes to suit all ages, tag-along for the younger ones and child seats for the little ones.
The hotels we use are a great, and sometimes unexpected, part of this tour. In the larger cities and established tourist centres we use stylish and supremely comfortable hotels and resorts, while in the smaller and more out of the way areas we stay in the best available accommodation, which is often simple yet always well run, clean and comes with air-conditioning and a private bathroom. All the hotels on this tour have swimming pools.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very well informed, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local leaders who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country and will help you to connect with the villagers you meet along the way.
For groups of 6+ people a bike mechanic will join the group. Whilst not a master of linguistics, our technical team always make an effort to form a bond with the group and provide not just mechanical support, but additional encouragement to those who may find themselves at the back of the group. Our drivers support the group by ensuring that the freshest fruit and tastiest snacks are picked up along the way.
Kids are well catered for on Grasshopper tours with a range of bike options to choose from. We have quality children's frames ranging down to XX-Small for those comfortable on a bike. For the less experienced tag-alongs are available that hook to the rear of an adult bike and allow kids to pedal along if they want, and for the youngest kids we have children's seats, so no one misses out on the fun.
An air conditioned backup support vehicle is always available in case you want a break from riding, and to carry your luggage.
Thai food is internationally famous, and for good reason. This trip is as much about food as riding with all the best of Thai food provided throughout the trip, and all tastes can be catered for, even fussy junior tastes. Included meals are listed in the day by day itinerary, and drinking water is always included with meals. Any soft or alcoholic drinks are not included and will be at your own expense.
Energy bars and local snacks are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water and electrolyte drinks are always available to keep you well hydrated.
Take It Home
A beautiful souvenir Grasshopper cycling jersey is yours to wear and take home. We even have mini ones for the younger kids. We also provide a Grasshopper drink bottle as an extra memento.

Bangkok Canal Boat & Bike Tour
We’ll meet this morning for introductions and a bike fitting before we head out to explore Bangkok together. We’ll begin pedaling along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, through back roads and hidden alleys to the Chinese Thai temple called Wat Kalayanamit with the city’s largest image of the sitting Buddha. From there we’ll cycle to an old market and artist’s village, then stop for a tasty Thai lunch by the canal.
Kids will enjoy the show put on by Hoon Lek puppeteers that combines puppets with traditional Kohn dance. Next, we’ll stow our bikes in the back of a long tail boat and float our way up the River of Kings past the Grand Palace. Enjoy dinner with your guide tonight after a great first day of immersion in Thai culture.
Bangkok to Pranburi - Transfer & Cycle
The day starts with a transfer to Bangkok’s historic train station. After picking you up from your hotel, the start of your journey begins at the Hua Lamphong Railway station for a 3 ½ hour journey to Hua Hin. Today's ride is an easy one following back roads through small towns and along quiet coastline. In Pranburi, you'll stay in a comfortable resort right on the coast, well away from the bustle of Bangkok where we started the day.
Pranburi - Activity Day
The coast of Thailand is renowned for beautiful beaches and gentle seas. Sun, sand, a pristine shoreline, the clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand and a charming local village and market make Pranburi a perfect place to relax and explore by foot. With dark coarse sand, a scattering of small islands and rock formations right off the coast, the view from the beach is quite beautiful and the swimming sublime. A perfect day to relax along the coast.
Cycle to Prachuap Khiri Khan
We start the morning with a ride to the coast for a hike and boat ride for a visit to the enchanting Phaya Nakorn Cave in Sam Roi Yot National Park. Following lunch, cycle past the stark limestone mountains of Sam Roi Yot National Park. If you are really lucky you might spot monkeys hanging out on the rocks. Prachuap Khiri Khan sits on a beautiful curved beach and is a small provincial town which few tourists visit. Another perfect place for us to stay!
Mangroves and Elephants
Today leave the bicycles behind to explore the mangrove forests of Sam Roi Yot National Park. This is a great place to see birdlife and to enjoy the quiet and wonder of the mangroves. There is a walk up to a cave on the headland and we then return to the pier where we take a drive inland to the Khi Buri National Park where we visit an Elephant Conservation site supported by WWF. Kids will enjoy learning about this great success story of wildlife conservation while seeing the elephants wandering around their sanctuary. This evening we return to Prachuap Khiri Khan to stay in the same hotel as the night before.
Cycle to Patio
Leaving Prachuap is a treat as we cycle through an Air Force base and over their runway to visit a colony of gentle langur monkeys. These cheeky, good-natured monkeys love to have visitors. Our guide is a favourite of theirs and can show you how to safely feed the monkeys a tasty and healthy snack. From here, we visit a nearby aquarium dedicated to the many fish species of the gulf. It really is an impressive place, and the location means that few foreigners get to visit.
Once we start riding, we will pass through the narrowest part of Thailand, which is only 11km wide. You can see a ridge on your right that marks the border with Myanmar. You'll overnight in Pathio, a small beachside community with expansive views of the Gulf of Thailand.
Where to Next?
Today marks the end of our time together. After breakfast and perhaps a swim, it is time to load up and move on. Depending on where you choose to go next, our team will take you to the ferry terminal for the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Tao, to the Chumporn Airport or to the Pathio train station.
What's the Riding Like?
Mostly flat terrain
4 days riding
This is a flat ride (only a few small hills) on back roads so it is achievable by anyone who can ride a bike for the distances involved (and if not just jump in the air conditioned support vehicle for a rest). We have cut the distances down to kids' size so that the whole family can realistically ride a decent amount of each day. We take a slow and relaxed pace so this trip is well suited to those who enjoy traveling by bike, but aren't looking to break any personal records or anything.
Coolest time: Nov-Feb
Wettest time: Jun-Oct
Dec-Jan & Jul-Aug
Central, North & Northeast Thailand
This region of Thailand has three seasons: 'the cool', 'the hot' and 'the wet'. November to February is cool and dry (sometimes even chilly in the far north), with temperatures starting to rise in March to reach a peak in late April and May. The onset of the rains, in late May, helps to bring temperatures down, with showers being generally heavy but short.
Unlike the rest of the country the south only really has two seasons - dry and wet. The rainy and dry seasons in the south alternate from coast to coast; when it is dry season on the Gulf of Thailand Coast (east side) it's rainy season on the Andaman Coast (west side) and vice versa. The Andaman Coast is rainy from April until October while on the Gulf of Thailand Coast most the rain falls from September to December.
While without doubt the best riding conditions are during the coolest part of the year (December & January), Thailand is at its most beautiful at the height of the rains (July & August) when the fields are a vibrant emerald green and the rice paddies full of water.

What our guests tell us...
Just a selection of our great reviews!
Cruising the Coast to Samui was the highlight of our 3 week trip to Thailand. Our Guide, driver of the support van, food, accommodations, bikes, and pre-trip administration were excellent. We travelled through beauty countryside and along the coastline, experiencing many parts of Thailand that most visitors don't get to see. We would highly recommend Grasshopper tours and if you are lucky you would have the pleasure of having Tick for your guide.
One of the best holidays I've ever had.
My family has just returned from a 5 day family bike trip down the coast of Thailand from Bangkok to Koh Samui. The trip was fantastic and my two teenage boys considered it the highlight of our trip to SE Asia. If you want to see a beautiful part of Thailand and have a great adventure along the way I highly recommend this trip.
A huge thanks to Seen and Mr. Wow, my guide and driver on the awesome "Cruising Bangkok to Koh Samui" trip . I had an awesome time and it was one of the best things I have ever signed up for.
