Biking the countryside and learning about village life
Making an early start, we'll meet at Siem Reap shop at 6:50am for a quick briefing and bike fitting before pedaling our way north to one of the two great irrigation reservoirs from the Angkor period, the West Baray. We ride along the wall of this impressive man-made lake and then ride south along the canals that are fed by the Baray. In the late morning we find ourselves in a small village, typical of those surrounding Siem Reap. Life here is still simple and based on seasonal agriculture. We take a walk through the village with a local resident who will explain the workings of this community and how your tour supports their local projects. After we sit down to a tasty lunch and spend some time chilling in a hammock.
Kayak the floating villages and Tonle Sap Lake
As the sun begins to drop in the sky, we make our way to a nearby river and shuttle by boat to our kayaks. We then take a paddle through the floating villages, where friendly locals will greet you with smiles. Kayaking impacts their lives far less than the noisy, smelly and disruptive tourist boats that occasionally come through. If the water level is high enough we will even explore a mangrove forest and then set out for the open lake. Tonle Sap is the largest lake in Southeast Asia, where your guide will explain the phenomenon that creates a depth variance of up to eight meters and why this lake is vital to Cambodia's survival.
We return to Siem Reap by car and can expect to arrive back around 6:30pm, depending on the seasons and the time of the sunset.
What's the Riding & Paddling Like?
Mostly flat terrain
1 hour kayaking
On the road
This ride is predominantly on flat tracks and small roads - there is only one, tiny hill, so anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this tour. There are some sections on small dirt trails with sand so beginner riders should not choose this tour.
On the water
The kayaking is on flat water and only lasts for a little over an hour, so it's perfectly achievable, even for those who haven't kayaked before.

What our guests tell us...
Just a selection of our great reviews!
The day was a definite highlight of our 2 week trip to Vietnam and Cambodia ...Our day ended just in time to take a beautiful sunset photo over the rice fields. It was a full day but much fun for all of us - a great day with a great guide.
This was our 2nd grasshopper tour and both have been perfection with regards to punctuality, english skills, knowledge of the area, manner and value. If you do a bike your in cambodia i would highly recommend grasshopper tours. You are garanteed a wonderful experience.
Grasshopper people - thank you for making today so VERY special for our family, and our now 11 year old son!!! This makes for two Grasshopper tours in 2 countries, and we are SURE to keep going with your amazing company! THANK YOU!
This was my second time doing a Grasshopper day tour (first was the Angkor Sunrise in Siem Reap, which was also amazing). The team at Grasshopper does an amazing job crafting every part of the ride, no detail is overlooked.
On the 3rd day, we did the pedal and paddle tour with our guide Muen, a local and dedicated guide. Another great way to discover locals and their way of life and living. Again, barely with any crowd around except for locals, cycling around the villages and cruising lazily to a quiet floating village, we had a beautiful Khmer lunch box and what felt like an 'indiana jones' but peaceful kayak tour of one of many mangroves around in the Tonle sap lake.
