Escape the bustle of Mandalay by bicycle to discover the tranquillity and charm of the countryside. This morning bike tour explores the highlights of rural Mandalay, giving a fascinating insight into daily life out of the city and travelling by bicycle offers a genuine connection with the surrounds and locals.
This morning bike tour runs in Mandalay.

When Kipling wrote of Mandalay it wasn't quite the buzzing and bustling city that it is now. Naturally, a perfect invitation for the Grasshopper Team to jump on a bike and rediscover the beauty of this town that sits on the list of many prospective visitors to Myanmar.

This is a bike tour through the stunning countryside that surrounds Mandalay. We ride through the unseen surrounds visiting fresh markets, cottage industry, farming villages and cycle back to Mandalay having made a genuine connection to the Myanmar countryside and people.

Please note: Myanmar day tours will not operate April 13th to 16th due to Burmese New Year holidays. We will re-open April 17th and apologise for any inconvenience. Hope you enjoy the many celebrations happening this time of year!

Tour Itinerary

For Mandalay Morning Ride tour

Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
We start the tour at 7:30 from our conveniently located shop and begin our bike ride through the back lanes to get out of town. Along the way we pass through fresh markets, lively neighbourhoods and head for the north east of the city.

Countryside Riding
After only a short pedal we find ourselves in the true countryside where farmers tend to their fields and villagers go about daily rituals that have remained unchanged for decades, if not longer. Water buffalo lazily roll in the mud, goats nibble at the foliage, and friendly locals wave from all directions, curious at the sight of visitors on bicycles.

Village Life
Along the tour we make some interesting stops, first passing a truly local monastery and, if we are lucky, we might be invited inside to see some hidden treasures from the royal palace. Continuing our ride the next stop is a local fresh produce market to learn about the different goods on sale.

Returning to the bikes we continue to ride our way to the countryside, stopping at a small Hindu temple where you’ll learn how the Hindus came to Myanmar and what important traditions they brought to the country.
Back on the bikes we cycle to the countryside, pedaling through neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city being greeted by friendly kids on their way to school.

On our route you’ll see how northern Mandalay slowly turns from modern suburbs to a rural, peaceful area, until you finally pass through a typical central Myanmar village, the perfect place to learn about their way of life and their different crops. On our rise back to town we stop at a tea shop for some delicious snacks and tea, returning to the Grasshopper Adventures shop at around 12:00 noon.

PLEASE NOTE: you should wear clothing suitable for this activity: quarter length pants, shorts, t-shirts are all advisable, as are comfortable closed shoes. Sunscreen is also a must.

What's the Riding Like?

Flat, uneven terrain

22km riding

We cycle about 22km on tracks and small roads. The surface can be uneven and at times a bit bumpy, but our bikes are specially prepared to handle this and your guide will demonstrate techniques on how to best to handle this terrain. There is minimal traffic at all times.

What our guests tell us...

Just a selection of our great reviews!

We had a fantastic time cycling through the Mandalay countryside with Than. We got to see the Mandalay outside of the guidebooks and met some lovely local people on the way. We visited markets, farms, little villages and was lucky to see an initiation ceremony in one of the villages for the young ‘monks’. Lunch in a tea room was a perfect end. Than was really friendly, knowledgeable and we learnt so much from him about all aspects of life. He went out of his way to make sure our experience was amazing - Jasmin flowers for Valentine’s Day , helping us find a bag etc. Overall a lovely way to spend our last day in Mandalay.

We spent the day visiting the countryside and seeing the real life of Myanmar people. Any question I had was answered and answered honestly by Then. I truly had a great morning and value this tour highly.

Angela J September 2018

Friendly, superbly organised staff took us on a diverse tour through local areas of Mandalay as well as farmland villages. Very good mountain bikes, water for underway, and good English speaking local guides providing wonderful insights into the life of the everyday Myanmar! Absolutely recommended!

Our guide was wonderful, good English, very welcoming and thoughtful and had lots of information to share. It was an easy and scenic ride and we enjoyed stopping at the market, a farm, a monastery and a tea shop (which had great food!). I would recommend this to everyone!

I had a really good time seeing the countryside with San, after visiting all the temples and pagodas this was a nice change, I strongly recommend everyone to go on this tour for something different.
