Full day tour from Bangkok, Thailand
Travel by bicycle to the Gulf of Thailand, mangrove conservation centre, salt pans and fishing villages. This trip runs outside Bangkok.

This is a unique tour, not offered by any other company, which takes you out of bustling Bangkok right to the water's edge of the Gulf of Thailand. We'll travel by bike, boat and train to a little visited part of Thailand populated by the local fish farmers and fishermen.

Once out of the urban area we ride along dirt roads bordered by mangroves on one side and salt pans or fish farms on the other. Stopping frequently to admire the unique wildlife, such as kingfishers catching their breakfast, or the protected and shy water monitors, some of which can reach up to 3 meters in length. But size is not everything and for most visitors the most peculiar of the fauna are the mudskipper fish - they certainly give a new meaning to the proverbial saying 'a fish out of water.'

Out here foreigners are a rarity, so as you gaze in amazement at the locals and their way of life, be prepared to be the object of scrutiny as well, as the locals will find you an interesting curiosity too. This is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city to wide open plains where the air is crisp and clean and the friendliness of the people will blow your mind.

So, slap on the sunblock and sunglasses and be prepared for a full day of amazement. Don't forget your binoculars as this tour goes to a nature lover's paradise.

Tour Itinerary

Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
We meet at the Grasshopper Shop at 6:30 am. Tour will depart at 7 am sharp. After a quick bike fitting and briefing we head out by cycling to the local train station. En route we'll cross the Chao Phraya River by ferry and then take the back-roads and alleyways to the station.

Train out of Bangkok
An hour long train ride gives you a good opportunity to relax and see the shift from urban landscape to country as we head out of the city. After arriving at the train station and taking our bicycles, we'll spend a short time wondering through the local market before taking the ferry across the river.

Biking to the Sea
Once over the river a short cycle will take us out of the urban area and to the start of some seriously exciting bicycling - along dirt roads, around fish farms and salt pans all the way down to the sea shore on the Gulf of Thailand where we'll have a delicious sea food lunch at a water's edge restaurant. We continue traveling along the Gulf, through the fishing village and down on to the Mangrove Conservation Centre, the Tha Chin port and its temple - which has the most beautiful crematorium in all of Thailand. Continuing through this little village we pedal our way back to the station for our trip home and a well deserved rest in the train.

This tour is a total of 52km and will take about 9 hours, usually finishing at around 5:30pm but this is variable by group.

What's the Riding Like?

Flat terrain

Some narrow lanes

52km riding

This is a generally easy ride on quiet country roads with no hills. The riding in Bangkok is through narrow alleyways away from the big roads (of course we need to cross some bigger roads but this is done carefully and usually with traffic lights). There are a couple of times where you will have to carry your bike on and off the train and over foot bridges. As it is a long day out we don't recommend this ride for novice cyclists.

The tropical sun can be quite fierce, so we recommend you use some sun block or, if you prefer a natural option, sun sleeves for your arms and Buff headwear for your neck.

Making a Booking

Bookings can be made by clicking the 'Book this tour' button below or at the top of this page.

Please note: If you will book this tour less than two days in advance please call us to confirm availability: (+66) 2280 0832.

This tour operates on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you would like to take the tour on a day that is not scheduled we can run private departures (subject to availability).

Cancellation Policy & Rain

You still need to turn up for the tour if it is raining. It is quite common that it can be raining in one part of the city and not raining in another. So if it's raining at your hotel don't assume it is raining where you will be cycling. Also it is common that the rain falls heavily and for short durations so if it does rain we just wait and continue the tour once the rain stops. We also have plastic rain ponchos for everyone in the case that you do need to ride in the rain. If heavy rains continues until 9:00am or if there is torrential flooding, you can choose to cancel with full refund or change your tour to another day.

Starting Time & Meeting Point

Grasshopper Adventures Shop
57 Ratchadamnoen Rd
Phranakorn

Note: street numbers are not overly useful in Thailand as people work more off landmarks and intersections. The best landmark close to us is Kok Wua Intersection which is about 200m west of our shop. This is also the intersection close to Khao San Rd, which is very well known.

Meeting time: 06:30am

Taxi
It is worth printing the map on this page to show a taxi driver if you choose to come to the Grasshopper Shop by taxi. Bear in mind that you will be travelling during peak hour so if travelling from the downtown area you should allow at least one hour to get here.

Canal Boat
The most efficient way from downtown to our area is on the Klong Saen Sap Boat. Take the Skytrain to Ratchatewi Station, go out of exit 1, then walk toward Siam Square/MBK along right hand side of road. As you go over a bridge you will see the canal (klong) beneath you. Go over the bridge and turn right down the steps and walk to the water. This boat stop is called Hua Chang. Take the boat heading to Phan Fa Lilat (just ask for Kao San road) which is the last stop. From there, again ask for Kao San Road. You can walk in 10 minutes or take a tuk tuk. We are 200 meters from the McDonalds at Democracy Monument. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.

River Boat
It is possible to get reasonably close to us on the Chao Phraya Express Boat getting off at Pier N13 Phra Athit which is a 15 minute walk or short tuk tuk ride from Phra Athit Pier. The ferry takes about 1 hour from Central Pier at Sapan Taksin. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.

Just a selection of our great Trip Advisor reviews!

I booked the Grasshopper’s Bangkok City to Shore bike ride because I wanted to get out of the city and I wanted a whole day tour of at least 40km of riding distance. The tour was everything I expected and more.
