Half day bike tour in old Bangkok, Thailand
Cycle tour the unseen Thonburi side of Bangkok and explore neighborhoods few visitors to the city have the opportunity to see.
Bike Historic Bangkok reveals the true heart of old Bangkok. Cycle tour your way through back-alleys, over bridges, through busy markets and past ornate temples. Exploring the city by bike you quickly see that there is a lot more to Bangkok than busy traffic and high-rise buildings.
Pedaling the small alleys and lanes you will discover ancient temples and life by the Chao Phraya River and in the tiny lanes that make up much of the city. Many people ask us how we found our way through the maze of streets that we take you through - the answer is simple: we bike every little lane we can find and it has literally taken years to develop this tour. No-one knows historic Bangkok like us, and our Bike Historic Bangkok bike tour is the best way to explore this spectacular old quarter! We promise to take you places on a bike that you would never be able to find on your own.

For Bike Historic Bangkok tour
Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
Meet at the Grasshopper Adventures Shop near Khaosan Rd at 8:30 am. The tour will depart at 9 am sharp. After a quick bike fitting and briefing we head out. Cycling through the heart of the backpacker area, Khaosan Road, you will soon be biking off the roads this bike tour winds through small laneways, past ancient temples and canals to see the heart and soul of Bangkok.
Get out and cycle
There are no particularly famous sights that you will see on this bike tour. It is all about exploring the city by bike away from the tourists and big roads, to see the real Bangkok where people live, work and play. We cycle along the Chao Phraya River and then pedal cross the river on the Rama 8 Bridge. From here we visit ancient temples and urban street life.
Bangkok Noi is the name given to a large canal of the Chao Phraya River. Bike along the canal through tiny alleyways home to a Muslim community. After cycling over a bridge you bike the canal back the other way, this time passing Buddhist temples and one of Bangkok’s first train depots. If open you are in luck to visit a bronze bowl foundry and the old steam engines at the Thonburi train depot - such is the diversity of the city when you get in close.
Ferry back over the Chao Phraya
After a local ferry to cross back over the river, our bike tour passes the Grand Palace where we take a walk through a public park that was once exclusively used by the royal family. After cycling more twisting alleyways, pedaling through a food market, you bike past rows of Buddhas and other sacred images. The area around the Giant Swing isis where Buddha images are made and sold. The Giant Swing is one of the landmarks of the city and was once used for an important Hindu ceremony. From the Swing it is only a short bike ride back to the Grasshopper Shop.THe bike tour finishes around 1 pm.
The bike tour usually takes 3-4 hours but this is variable by group. After the ride relax in our shop and enjoy a complimentary drink from our fridge. A nice end to a unique bike tour through old Bangkok.
What's the Riding Like?
An Easy Bangkok Bike Tour
This is a generally easy ride on quiet back streets and alleyways. There are some very narrow sections where good bike control is required but you can always walk these sections if you are not comfortable. There are some main roads to cross but we do this as a group and the Bangkok drivers are very courteous when it comes to crossing the road.
The tropical sun can be quite fierce, so we recommend you use some sun block or, if you prefer a natural option, sun sleeves for your arms and Buff headwear for your neck.
Men and Woman need to cover their shoulders to enter temples and mosques. Woman need to cover their knees as well, so If you like to wear shorts when riding, we recommend bringing a sarong to wear for entering a temple or mosque.

Cancellation Policy & Rain
You still need to turn up for the tour if it is raining. It is quite common that it can be raining in one part of the city and not raining in another. So if it's raining at your hotel don't assume it is raining where you will be cycling. Also it is common that the rain falls heavily and for short durations so if it does rain we just wait and continue the tour once the rain stops. We also have plastic rain ponchos for everyone in the case that you do need to ride in the rain. If heavy rains continues until 12:00pm or if there is torrential flooding, you can choose to cancel with full refund or change your tour to another day.

Note: street numbers are not overly useful in Thailand as people work more off landmarks and intersections. The best landmark close to us is Kok Wua Intersection which is about 200m west of our shop. This is also the intersection close to Khao San Rd, which is very well known.
Meeting time: 08:30am
It is worth printing the map on this page to show a taxi driver if you choose to come to the Grasshopper Shop by taxi. Bear in mind that you will be travelling during peak hour so if travelling from the downtown area you should allow at least one hour to get here.
The most efficient way from downtown to our area is on the Klong Saen Sap Boat. Take the Skytrain to Ratchatewi Station, go out of exit 1, then walk toward Siam Square/MBK along right hand side of road. As you go over a bridge you will see the canal (klong) beneath you. Go over the bridge and turn right down the steps and walk to the water. This boat stop is called Hua Chang. Take the boat heading to Phan Fa Lilat (just ask for Kao San road) which is the last stop. From there, again ask for Kao San Road. You can walk in 10 minutes or take a tuk tuk. We are 200 meters from the McDonalds at Democracy Monument. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.

It is possible to get reasonably close to us on the Chao Phraya Express Boat getting off at Pier N13 Phra Athit which is a 15 minute walk or short tuk tuk ride from Phra Athit Pier. The ferry takes about 1 hour from Central Pier at Sapan Taksin. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.

What our guests tell us...
Just a selection of our great reviews!
We rode through inner-city neighborhoods we would have never seen - the locals greeted us warmly! Our temple visit included information we hadn't received from two previous temple tours. I was impressed with the historical and cultural details included for a bike ride! I would highly recommend doing this on your arrival in Bangkok it is a great way to feel a part of the flow of this big city life
Had a lovely morning cycling through the tiny streets of Bangkok. Its a great chance to see a less touristy side of the city, cycling through the maze of houses on stilts and alleyways. The guide was hey friendly and made sure everyone was ok. I would recommend to anyone looking for something a little different.
Given the degree of personalization, helpfulness and kindness of the guides, and willingness to adapt, I highly recommend Grasshopper.
I felt safe and well led and we had plenty of time at each stop to hear about the local history and understand the Thailand way of life. Knowledgeable, entertaining and enthusiastic, I would highly recommend Tik and Grasshopper tours. This was my second in 2 days.
With the “Bike Historic Bangkok” tour, I felt like I really got to know the city more by seeing how its people lived and went on with their business and how they moved and got themselves from place to place, more than the usual Bangkok temple tour ever could.
