Half day bike tour in Bangkok, Thailand
Cycle the quiet side of Bangkok and see a very different side of the city. This bike tour runs in Bangkok.
Historic Bangkok reveals the true heart of this bustling city. Cycle the
back roads and small laneways to discover there is more to this
city than busy traffic and high-rise buildings.
Riding the quiet 'soi' and lanes you will discover ancient temples and life by the Chao Phraya River and in the tiny lanes that make up much of the city. Many people ask us how we found our way through the labyrinth of streets that we take you on - the answer is simple: we ride every little lane we can find. It has literally taken years to develop this tour. No-one knows historic Bangkok like us, and our Historic Bangkok bike tour is the best way to explore this spectacular region!

For Bike Historic Bangkok
Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
Meet at the Grasshopper Adventures Shop near Khao San Rd at 8:30 am. The tour will depart at 9 am sharp. After a quick bike fitting and briefing we head out. Staying off the roads this bike tour winds through small laneways, past ancient temples and canals to see the heart and soul of Bangkok.
Get out and ride
There are no particularly famous sights that you will see on this tour (our alternative name for the ride is "no crowds Bangkok"). It is all about seeing the city away from the tourists and big roads, to see the real Bangkok where people live, work and play. We start with a ride along the Chao Phraya River and then cross the river using Rama 8 Bridge. From here we visit ancient temples and urban street life.
Bangkok Noi is the name given to a large canal of the Chao Phraya River. You'll ride alongside the canal through tiny alleyways that are home to a Muslim community. After crossing over a bridge you follow the canal back the other way, this time passing Buddhist temples - such is the diversity of the city when you get in close.
Ferry back over the Chao Phraya
After a local ferry to cross back over the river, our bike tour passes the Grand Palace where we take a walk through a public park that was once exclusively used by the royal family. After more twisting alleyways, riding through a food market and Buddha image wholesaling area you end up at the Giant Swing. The Giant Swing is one of the landmarks of the city and was once used for an important Hindu ceremony. From the Swing it is only a short ride back to the Grasshopper Shop. We usually arrive around 1 pm.
The bike tour usually takes 3-4 hours but this is variable by group. After the ride relax in our shop and enjoy a complimentary drink from our fridge. A nice end to a great morning out.
What's the Riding Like?
This is a generally easy ride on quiet back streets and alleyways. There are some very narrow sections where good bike control is required but you can always walk these sections if you are not comfortable. There are some main roads to cross but we do this as a group and the Bangkok drivers are very courteous when it comes to crossing the road.
The tropical sun can be quite fierce, so we recommend you use some sun block or, if you prefer a natural option, sun sleeves for your arms and Buff headwear for your neck.
Men and Woman need to cover their shoulders to enter temples and mosques. Woman need to cover their knees as well, so If you like to wear shorts when riding, we recommend bringing a sarong to wear for entering a temple or mosque.

Cancellation Policy & Rain
You still need to turn up for the tour if it is raining. It is quite common that it can be raining in one part of the city and not raining in another. So if it's raining at your hotel don't assume it is raining where you will be cycling. Also it is common that the rain falls heavily and for short durations so if it does rain we just wait and continue the tour once the rain stops. We also have plastic rain ponchos for everyone in the case that you do need to ride in the rain. If heavy rains continues until 12:00pm or if there is torrential flooding, you can choose to cancel with full refund or change your tour to another day.
Book this tour
This tour operates everyday at 9am. If you have a group of 4 or more we can also run this trip in the afternoon (subject to availability).
Starting Time & Meeting Point
Grasshopper Adventures Shop
57 Ratchadamnoen Rd
Note: street numbers are not overly useful in Thailand as people work more off landmarks and intersections. The best landmark close to us is Kok Wua Intersection which is about 200m west of our shop. This is also the intersection close to Khao San Rd, which is very well known.
Meeting time: 08:30am
It is worth printing the map on this page to show a taxi driver if you choose to come to the Grasshopper Shop by taxi. Bear in mind that you will be travelling during peak hour so if travelling from the downtown area you should allow at least one hour to get here.
The most efficient way from downtown to our area is on the Klong Saen Sap Boat. Take the Skytrain to Ratchatewi Station, go out of exit 1, then walk toward Siam Square/MBK along right hand side of road. As you go over a bridge you will see the canal (klong) beneath you. Go over the bridge and turn right down the steps and walk to the water. This boat stop is called Hua Chang. Take the boat heading to Phan Fa Lilat (just ask for Kao San road) which is the last stop. From there, again ask for Kao San Road. You can walk in 10 minutes or take a tuk tuk. We are 200 meters from the McDonalds at Democracy Monument. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.

It is possible to get reasonably close to us on the Chao Phraya Express Boat getting off at Pier N13 Phra Athit which is a 15 minute walk or short tuk tuk ride from Phra Athit Pier. The ferry takes about 1 hour from Central Pier at Sapan Taksin. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.

What our guests tell us...
Just a selection of our great Trip Advisor reviews!
I have been to BKK numerous times, but this tour is the icing on the cake. Tiny alleys, no one would ever find, friendly people and great bikes make the trip a once in a lifetime experience!
The trip (morning tour through historical Bangkok) was awesome. Having the inside into local living communities, food, drinks and craft work. Just great!
My girlfriend and I booked this tour due to it's great reviews on TripAdvisor and to be honest, THE HYPE IS REAL! We came with very few expectations but were overwhelmed by another side of Bangkok that we had not seen from the temple tours.
Best thing we did in Bangkok.
