Half day bike tour in Bagan, Myanmar
The temple-strewn plain of Bagan is one of the highlights of any visit to Myanmar. Our bike tour offers a comprehensive introduction to this fascinating area, with a team of experienced resident guides on hand to share their local insight and knowledge. This is the perfect way to start a visit to Bagan.
This bike tour runs in Bagan.
Bagan features on every traveller’s itinerary to Myanmar, and rightly so. The lanes which wind around the 9th-13th century structures, and along the bank of the mighty Irrawaddy River, make for an awe-inspiring setting for a bike ride.
Join us on this half-day bike tour as we ride through the Monument Zone, calling in to visit the three most important temples - Ananda, Dhamayangyi and Shwezigon. We’ll also show you some smaller, less well-known ruins in search of atmosphere and that elusive ‘Bagan Magic’. Our well maintained bikes are the perfect vehicles for this, and you'll be led by our young and enthusiastic guides who have all been professionally trained. It’s not just pagodas and ruins on this bike tour of course! - we’ll also visit local markets, cottage industries and even a curious factory making an interesting local delicacy, to give you an understanding of modern life in this ancient setting.
Please note: Our Bagan bike tours will not operate April 13th to 17th due to Burmese New Year holidays. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope you enjoy the many celebrations happening around this time of year.

We’ll park the bikes up so we can thoroughly explore the iconic ‘Big Three’ of Ananda, Dhamayangyi and Shwezigon, taking 20-30 minutes at each to fully appreciate their splendour. In addition we’ll seek out some quieter, more intimate ruins which we are likely to have to ourselves.
We’ll leave from our shop on well-made, paved roads so we can warm-up and get a feel for our bikes. Soon this changes to unsealed backroads and smaller trails, winding through the Bagan plain. The atmosphere is peaceful and our guide will use his local knowledge to avoid the main tourist crowds as much as possible.
Impeccably maintained Merida mountain bikes with a helmet are provided. The bikes have front suspension, a comfortable saddle and an upright riding position. We also have specially equipped tires to minimise the incidence of punctures from the tiny thorns that lie in the sands of the Bagan Plain. We provide a handlebar bag to carry your personal items in and a refillable water bottle is provided.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very well informed, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local leaders who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country.
Local snacks and fresh fruit are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water is always available to keep you well hydrated.

For Bagan Morning Ride bike tour
Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
We start the tour with a bike fitting and short safety briefing at our conveniently located shop and then set off to visit the local produce market, which is in full swing. There, ladies call out greetings to you and show you their fresh wares, amused to see foreign visitors here at this early hour!
A Plain of Temples
Next we’ll ride out of town on the back streets before getting out and onto the first sandy trails of the Monument Zone. We’ll make several stops to see what’s interesting along the way - maybe a secluded ancient brick monastery where a couple of devout monks still live among the ruins; perhaps the bamboo weavers are at work today, happy to show us their skills. Kids wave from schoolyards and farmers from their fields.
Ananda and Dhammayangyi
We’ll make full tours of these most significant temples, marvelling at the workmanship of the construction and beautiful internal decoration. Your guide knows all the curiosities and tales, tall or not, from these enigmatic structures. He might tell you a few while you have a well-deserved snack break in their shadows
We won’t just stay out on the plain but also bike tour through typical Dry Zone villages and see what the locals are up to as we pass. Small markets & simple shops; chickens, children, pigs and dogs - even the occasional horse - all compete for your attention as we pass.
Shwezigon and Nyaung U
We’ll avoid the main roads as much as possible to arrive near the principle town of the area, Nyaung U. Here we’ll visit the third of our major temples for the day, the Shwezigon; the most revered pagoda of them all. After a full tour of the complex we’ll head into the backstreets where newly built dwellings sit beside original bamboo houses and brick warehouses dating from the 1950s, making an interesting architectural mixture. Inside one of these is an equally interesting factory, producing something truly unique.
Tea Shop Lunch
As we will have cycled about 20km over the 5 or so hours of the bike tour, you may be ready for a classic ‘Tea Shop Lunch” served in typical Burmese style. Your guide will order a selection of local treats and delicacies, of course all topped off with a cup of classic Burmese sweet tea.
Hotel Drop Off
After your lunch we will transport you back to your hotel in an air-conditioned minibus. You can now head for your hotel pool, knowing you have truly learned, seen and experienced enough to enjoy some well-earned relaxation time.
Please note: you should be suitably dressed for this bike tour - long shorts, t-shirts (shoulders must be covered inside the pagodas) are advisable, as are comfortable closed shoes (not flip-flops/thongs) to prevent scratches from briars. Sunscreen is also a must.
Fancy a Full Day?
We have carefully designed this morning’s itinerary to complement that of our “Bike & Boat Sunset Tour” so that the two tours can be combined to make a fantastic full-day tour or to be taken over a couple of days to fully absorb and appreciate this spectacular area.
What's the Riding Like?
Flat terrain, some sand
This bike tour is predominately on flat tracks and small roads - there are no hills in the area so anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this tour. There are some sections on sandy trails.

What our guests tell us...
Just a selection of our great TripAdvisor reviews!
The tour was fantastic. We went round many of the well known temples but our guide also took us to some of the less we’ll known ones too, a little out of the way. It really is a great way to travel around and see all the temples. The guide was very knowledgeable and talked us through all the history and legends that surround Bagan.
Highly recommend the tour, a great way to see Bagan.
A highly organised and enjoyable affair! Care was taken to ensure all cycling abilities of the tour were taken care of, and the temples visited were well selected, in addition to the mix of sand track / road cycling in the route chosen.
We had a ride with grasshoppers in Bagan last week. We loved it! YeYe our guide was great, he especially looked after my teenage son who had a million questions! It was a brilliant way to see the temples, totally safe, fun and relaxed. The ride was around 20km over four hours or so, the pace was gentle. YeYe also knew his history and detail so was very informative. I would thoroughly recommend this tour company and would use again and in another country, in fact I very much look forward to using them again.
I would highly recommend this if you want to learn a bit about the temples, history and local culture, better than just wondering around on your own aimlessly. I think I will back next time for a much longer tour.
