Half day bike tour in Bagan, Myanmar
The temple-strewn plain of Bagan is a highlight of any visit to Myanmar and a guided tour of the sites by bike should be a must-do experience for everyone. Grasshopper Adventures morning tour offers a comprehensive introduction to this fascinating area, with our expert resident guides on-hand to share all their local insight and knowledge. This is the perfect way to start your visit to Bagan.
This bike tour runs in Bagan.

Bagan features on every traveller’s itinerary to Myanmar, and rightly so. The lanes which wind around the 9th-13th century structures, and along the bank of the mighty Irrawaddy River, make for an awe-inspiring setting for a bike tour.

Join us on this half-day guided ride as we bike through the Monument Zone, calling in to visit the two most important temples - Ananda and Dhamayangyi. We’ll also tour smaller, less well-known ruins in search of atmosphere and that elusive ‘Bagan Magic’. Our bikes are the perfect vehicles for exploring, led by professional and enthusiastic guides. It’s not just pagodas and ruins of course - along the ride we’ll visit local markets, cottage industries and even a curious local artist, his designs will give you an understanding of modern life in this ancient setting.

Please note: Myanmar day tours will not operate April 13th to 16th due to Burmese New Year holidays. We will re-open April 17th and apologise for any inconvenience. Hope you enjoy the many celebrations happening this time of year!

Tour Itinerary

For Bagan Morning Ride bike tour

Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
Meet at the shop at 7:45am and your tour begins with a bike fitting and short safety briefing at our convenient location, we then set off directly out of town following a dirt trail. We will be passing the first set of temples before visiting the local produce market in a small village. It will be in full swing and ladies will be calling out greetings to you and show you their fresh wares, amused to see foreign visitors here at this early hour!

A Plain of Temples
We will continue our bike tour through the plains, where we’ll make several stops to see what’s interesting along the way - maybe a secluded ancient brick monastery where a couple of devout monks still live among the ruins; perhaps the bamboo weavers are at work today, happy to show us their skills. Throughout your ride you'll likely see excited kids wave from schoolyards and farmers from their fields.

Ananda and Dhammayangyi
We’ll get off the bikes for some short tours of these most significant temples, marvelling at the workmanship of the construction and beautiful internal decoration. Your guide knows all the curiosities and tales, tall or not, from these enigmatic structures. He might tell you a few while you have a well-deserved snack break in the shadow of one of the quieter temples, where with some luck we may have the privilege to be just by ourselves.

Village Life
We won’t just stay out on the plain but also ride through typical Dry Zone villages and see what the locals are up to as we pass. Small markets & simple shops; chickens, children, pigs and dogs - even the occasional horse - all compete for your attention as we roll by.

Nyaung U
We’ll avoid the main roads as much as possible touring lanes and trails to arrive near the principle town of the area, Nyaung U. Here we’ll visit the tiny workshop of an artist. We will learn more about his curious art, before we’ll head into the backstreets where newly built dwellings sit beside original bamboo houses and brick warehouses dating from the 1950s, making an interesting architectural mixture.

Tea Shop Lunch
As we will have biked about 20km over the 5 or so hours of the tour, you should be ready for a classic "Tea Shop Lunch” served in typical Burmese style. Your guide will order a selection of local treats and delicacies, of course all topped off with a cup of classic Burmese sweet tea. For many guests this is one of the more unexpected highlights of the tour.

Hotel Drop Off
After your lunch we will transport you back to your hotel in an air-conditioned minibus. You can now head for a well earned soak in hotel pool, knowing you have truly learned, seen and experienced enough to deserve some relaxation time.

Please note: you should be suitably dressed for this bike tour - long shorts, t-shirts (shoulders must be covered inside the pagodas) are advisable, as are comfortable closed shoes (not flip-flops/thongs) to prevent scratches from briars. Sunscreen is also a must.

What's the Riding Like?

Flat terrain, some sand

20km riding

This cycle tour is predominantly on flat tracks and small roads - there are no hills in the area so anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this tour. There are some sections on sandy trails.

What our guests tell us...

Just a selection of our great reviews!

The tour was informative, fun and varied including temples, pagodas and cycling to villages and markets off the beaten track. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to pay to stay on and join the afternoon tour!

I joined the morning tour which was fabulous. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and fun. They took us through the backroad paths through beautiful scenery and amazing temples. Our break and lunch meals were delicious. The tour was so good that I stayed and continued on the evening tour, which was better than I could have imagined.

lorid723November 2018

We started our tour early in the morning to get on the top of a small hill (collapsed temple) where we admire a spectacular sunrise on a landscape of thousands pagodas, stupas and temples shrouded in mist air, while tens of ballons were floating in the air. A small tea house was the next stop in new Bagan for a quick breakfast before starting the morning cycle. I cannot imagine a better way to visit Bagan than on a bycicle. Min Thaw, our guide, was very nice and professional. He lead us trough small dirt roads from one temple to the other, across small villages, to local street market and art shops. If you like to cycle and explore around I would definitely recommend Grasshopper as the way to go in Bagan
