Half day bike tour in Bagan, Myanmar
The temple-strewn plain of Bagan is a highlight of Myanmar, but it's only those who take to two wheels who get to really experience the true wonder of the temples, the beauty of the plain, and the charms of town. This bike tour runs in Bagan.
No holiday to Myanmar would be complete without a visit to the
temple-studded plains of Bagan. The lanes which wind around the 9th-13th
century structures and the mighty Irrawaddy River running alongside are
an awe-inspiring setting for a bike tour.
Join us on this half day ride as we bike Bagan, traveling through some of the 4000 temples. In addition to taking in the essential highlights, you will also get a taste for the lives of the local residents as we pass through fields, farms and villages. After refuelling with traditional snacks at a tea shop, our van will drive you back to your hotel by around 1pm.

In addition to the iconic temples of Shwesandaw, Ananda, and Shwezigon, we visit some minor, less known temples and see the impressive Dhamayangyi and Htilominlo from a distance. This bike tour will give you a good understanding of the geography of the Plain and a good introduction and overview of the temples.
Leaving town we ride on well made, paved road to get the feel for our bikes. Soon this changes to unsealed backroads and trails. The atmosphere out here on the plain, littered with iconic temples, is peaceful, and there is no better way to experience that than by using Bagan's network of dirt and sand trails, thus avoiding the main tourist crowds.
Impeccably maintained Merida mountain bikes with a helmet are provided. The bikes have front suspension, a comfortable saddle and an upright riding position. We also have specially equipped tires to minimise the incidence of punctures from the tiny thorns that lie in the sands of the Bagan Plain. We provide a handlebar bag to carry your personal items in and a refillable water bottle is provided.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very well informed, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local leaders who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country.
Local snacks and fresh fruit are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water is always available to keep you well hydrated.
1 to 10
This tour is guaranteed for a minimum of just 1 traveller. And we limit the group size to only 10 travellers so that you get all the attention you want in an intimate group.
We have a range of kids sized bikes, tag-alongs and child seats so there's no reason to leave the kids at the hotel. And to help families we offer discounts to all children aged 15 years and below: Ages 0 to 4 years - 50% off / Ages 5 to 12 years - 30% off / Ages 13 to 15 years - 10% off
For Bagan Morning Ride
Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
We start from our conveniently located shop and ride through the back lanes to get into the temple plains. We quickly leave the sealed, busy roads behind and venture off onto dirt tracks, only accessible to bikes and horses.
A Plain of Temples
It's not long before we are pedalling alongside ancient brick structures, pausing to visit some of the most famous monuments like Shwesandaw, Ananda and Shwezigon as well as several hidden gems. When biking we'll often be greeted by friendly farmers working in the fields next to our bike lanes and we will be sure to seek out an elevated temple to climb up for a different view of the Bagan Plain.
Aside from temples, Bagan is still a buzzing little town and we'll be sure to explore some of the traditions and lifestyles of its people. The village roads are lined with single-story bamboo houses standing adjacent to unique 1950s, brick warehouses. Kids on a break from school, snack vendors and a menagerie of pigs, cows and the occasional horse greet us along the way. We pause our ride to see the production of local treats and pay a visit to the friendly neighbours.
We cap off the morning with a visit to a tea shop where we will sample unique snacks and, of course sip a cup of sweet Myanmar tea. Then we'll travel by local truck or van back to your hotel concluding the tour around 12-1pm.
PLEASE NOTE: you should wear clothing suitable for this bike tour: quarter length pants, shorts, t-shirts are all advisable (shoulders must be covered at the temples), as are comfortable closed shoes to prevent scratches from briars. Sunscreen is also a must.
What's the Riding Like?
Flat terrain, some sand
This ride is predominately on flat tracks and small roads - there are no hills in the area so anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this tour. There are some sections on sandy trails.
