Tour Itinerary

Pickup from your Hotel
Our Mountain and Lake Day Tour starts with a pickup from your hotel at approximately 7 am for a drive up into the western mountains of the southern Shan State. The drive takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, giving us a good head start up at a high elevation. Here we have a bike fitting, safety briefing and an introduction to our day's riding before hitting the bikes and really beginning our journey.
Scenic Morning Ride
The ride starts out with enough tarmac to warm up our legs (around 14km) as we move quickly out of town with grand views over patchwork fields and a backdrop of high mountains. Local farmers and villagers from the Pa-O and Danu tribes go about their daily life, quick to return a smile and a wave as we roll by. There are four sustained but steady climbs to tackle as we leave the tarmac and move onto a wide gravel road. We'll be stopping at times to catch our breath and see local highlights such as basket weaving, an activity that supplements local farming income. The landscape opens up to expansive views over the Shan Plateau. Amid the scenic rural landscape and cabbage fields we see towering shady trees that are sacred and believed to be the abode of Nat spirits.
Downhill Coast
After around 25 km we'll stop in one of the local villages for a snack stop before riding into scenery that gets more and more dramatic. Some small climbs en-route present a moderate challenge, but soon we are rewarded with our most exciting descent - one that extends for 12 km - giving scenic views of the lake and distant mountain range.
Boat Ride on the Lake
We reach the lake at Indein Village where we'll enjoy a hearty lunch in a typical restaurant. We will visit the romantic stupas on Indein before loading our bikes and ourselves into a long-tail boat for a thrilling trip down the Indein Canal. This narrow, jungle-lined waterway has a unique set of bamboo weirs through which we will drop before heading out across the open lake. We'll pass by villages of the Intha People and see their unique farming and fishing methods. Floating vegetable gardens, anchored by bamboo stakes grow delicious tomatoes, and conical framed fishing nets provide us the iconic image of the famous leg-rowing fisherman. There is plenty to see as we make our way across the lake eventually arriving back in Nyaung Shwe.
WHAT’S INCLUDED

Hidden Trails
There's enough tarmac at the start of the ride to warm your legs up and get a feel for the bike but then it's gravel and dirt roads for pretty much the rest of the day. The morning's hilly roads are all wide and open (with great views!) and as they are not technically challenging they should present no problems for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. In the afternoon, we disappear into the forests along narrow dirt paths which climb gently through the foothills. In the wetter months these trails do become muddy, which adds to the fun!

Boating
This tour includes a boat ride across Inle Lake to break up the riding. It's a great way to see traditionally made bamboo stilt houses, floating vegetable gardens and witness the daily lives of the famous lake fishermen.

Nice Wheels
Quality, well maintained GT mountain bikes with hydraulic disc brakes, water bottle and international standard helmet are provided. These are very capable bikes that are a pleasure to ride and able to carry you in comfort throughout the tour. For groups of 6+ people, a specialist Bike Mechanic will also accompany the group.

Your Guide
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very well informed, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local guides who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country while keeping your safety and comfort a top priority.

Inle Lake
This tour explores the wonderful landscapes around Inle Lake. This is the second largest lake in Myanmar, providing a vital source of food & economy for the surrounding communities. Keep your eyes peeled for traditional fishermen rowing with their feet.

Snacking
Breakfast starts with tea at a typical Burmese Tea Shop in the small mountain town of Aung Ban. Throughout the day we will stop to savour local delicacies and roadside snacks. Lunch at a family run restaurant is complemented by a visit to a local vineyard for a wine tasting, a perfect way to end the day.

2 to 8
This tour is guaranteed for a minimum of just 2 people. And we limit the group size to 8 travelers so that you get all the attention you want in an intimate group.

Kids’ Prices

GUEST REVIEWS
Another fantastic ride with Grasshopper Adventures, this time with our guide Wai from the Inle shop. My girlfriend and I opted to do the Mountains and Lake Bike Adventure, a full day of experiences you just wouldn't get if you tried to explore this area on your own.Wai was very knowledgeable and he gave a comprehensive & detailed account of the area and its history throughout the day, various stops along the way gave the opportunity to interact with locals in ways you wouldn't normally have the opportunity to do. We certainly recommend Grasshopper Adventures for their bike tours. Thank you again Grasshopper.
