Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
Meet at the shop at 7:45 am, and your tour begins with a bike fitting and short safety briefing at our convenient location. Before jumping on the bike, our experienced local guide will explain to you the areas we will explore around Bagan.
A Plain of Temples
We will be pedaling to the first set of temples and make several stops along the way - we’ll park the bikes at a secluded ancient brick monastery where a couple of devout monks still live among the ruins. From here, we will head to a local market in a small village. Take in the buzz of local activity as ladies call out friendly greetings and show you their fresh produce, amused to see foreign visitors here at such an early hour! A great cultural experience. Throughout your ride, you'll likely see excited kids wave from schoolyards and farmers from their fields and there will be no shortage of connection with local life.
Ananda and Dhammayangyi
We’ll get off the bike to explore some of the most significant temples, marveling at the workmanship of the construction and beautiful interior decoration. Your guide will explain the secrets and features hiding behind these enigmatic structures. He will tell you a few tales about Bagan and its past while you have a well-deserved snack break in the shadow of one of the quieter temples, where, with some luck, we may be just by ourselves.
In addition to cycling the plain, we’ll ride through typical dry zone villages and see what the locals are up to as we pass. A small market and simple shops, chickens, children, cows, goats and dogs, even the occasional horse, all compete for your attention as we pedal by. We’ll avoid the main roads as much as possible, touring quiet lanes and trails to arrive to a small village which is called ‘’West Phwar Saw’’. Here we’ll visit local cottage industries such as lacquer wear workshops at a local family house, peanut oil production, and a cotton weaving house.
Tea Shop Lunch
At this point, you will have pedaled up quite an appetite and will be ready for a "Tea Shop Lunch” served in typical Burmese style. Your guide will order a selection of local treats and delicacies, all topped off with a cup of classic Burmese sweet tea. For many guests, this is one of the more unexpected highlights of the tour. After enjoying wonderful local style lunch at the local tea shop, it is about time to ride back to our shop in New Bagan to finish your amazing journey with us.
Ask your guide Or our shop supervisor to arrange a taxi
After a light lunch, it’s time to say ‘’Good Bye’’ and to ask your guide to arrange a taxi or tuk tuk back to your hotel. Reflect on your day of cycling, knowing you have truly learned, seen and experienced enough to deserve some relaxation time.
Please note: you should be suitably dressed for this bike tour - long shorts, t-shirts (shoulders must be covered inside the pagodas) are advisable, as are comfortable closed shoes (not flip-flops/thongs) to prevent scratches from briars. Sunscreen is also a must. All of the day’s riding is extremely flat, but expect some sandy sections.
We’ll park the bikes so we can thoroughly explore the iconic temples of Ananda and Dhamayangyi, taking time at each to fully appreciate their splendour. In addition we’ll seek out some quieter, more intimate ruins which we are likely to have to ourselves.
We’ll ride out from our shop on well-made, paved roads so we can warm up and get a feel for our bikes. Soon this changes to unsealed backroads and smaller trails, winding through the plain. The atmosphere is peaceful and our guide will use his local knowledge to avoid the main tourist crowds.
Impeccably maintained Merida mountain bikes with a helmet are provided. The bikes have front suspension, a comfortable saddle and an upright riding position. We also have specially equipped tires to minimise the incidence of punctures from the tiny thorns that lie in the sands of the Bagan Plain. We provide a handlebar bag to carry your personal items in and a refillable water bottle is provided.
An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very knowledgeable, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local guides who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country while looking out for your safety and comfort at all times.
Local snacks and fresh fruit are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water is always available to keep you well hydrated.

We started our tour early in the morning to get on the top of a small hill (collapsed temple) where we admire a spectacular sunrise on a landscape of thousands pagodas, stupas and temples shrouded in mist air, while tens of ballons were floating in the air. A small tea house was the next stop in new Bagan for a quick breakfast before starting the morning cycle. I cannot imagine a better way to visit Bagan than on a bycicle. Min Thaw, our guide, was very nice and professional. He lead us trough small dirt roads from one temple to the other, across small villages, to local street market and art shops. If you like to cycle and explore around I would definitely recommend Grasshopper as the way to go in Bagan
The tour was informative, fun and varied including temples, pagodas and cycling to villages and markets off the beaten track. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to pay to stay on and join the afternoon tour!
I joined the morning tour which was fabulous. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and fun. They took us through the backroad paths through beautiful scenery and amazing temples. Our break and lunch meals were delicious. The tour was so good that I stayed and continued on the evening tour, which was better than I could have imagined.
The Bagan Sunrise Experience tour is all about viewing the sunrise over a stunning landscape. After breakfast you can continue on the Bagan Morning Ride to explore the ancient sights of Old Bagan in more depth to learn about the history and culture.
