Colombo is a captivating blend of both modern and traditional narratives, as new towering skyscrapers and flashy shopping malls rise alongside ancient temples and never-changing bustling market stalls.
The country’s largest city and commercial capital sits on the island’s western coast and is a real melting pot of cultures, with a mix of Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors and Burghers making up the 5-million-strong local population.
Visitors to the city can expect plenty of historical interest around the Fort area, the colonial-era center of the city and a popular tourist hotspot, where they can admire the Colombo Fort Clock Tower and the Old Parliament Building. However, it’s in the city’s markets where the authentic charm of Colombo comes to the fore with the delightfully vibrant and intriguing cuisine on offer.
