The PERFECT 8-Day Thailand Itinerary for Active Travelers

Lirene CilliersBy Lirene Cilliers   Posted 24th Oct 2023

If you're reading this, it means you've probably been dreaming of a trip to Thailand for a while and you're ready to step into a world where your only concern is whether to add extra chili to your Pad Thai or not at all.

Southern Thailand evokes images of tropical beaches, secluded islands, and swaying palm trees. The iconic scenes are so well known that it’s regularly top of the list for an exotic beach vacation, but did you know there is much more to see and do beyond island hopping and basking in the sun?

Well, buckle up those seatbelts (or better yet, your bike helmets), and get ready to cannonball into this epic Southern Thailand trip. In this blog post we explore a side of Thailand not many get to see.

Best Time to Visit Southern Thailand:

Southern Thailand boasts a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, the ideal time to visit is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to March.

During these months, you can expect pleasant weather with lower humidity, making outdoor activities and beach excursions all the more enjoyable. If you prefer fewer crowds and are willing to embrace warmer weather or occasional rainfall, the shoulder seasons of April to June and September to October can offer unique experiences.

July and August offer a pleasant window bridging the gap between the heat of the dry season and the onset of the rainy wet season, making it a delightful time to embark on your journey.

2 Days in Hua Hin

Say goodbye to Bangkok's traffic jams and hello to the charming coastal town, Hua Hin.

Hua Hin is just around 200 kilometers southwest of Bangkok and it's easy to get there from the city. Surprisingly, not many international travelers have it on their radar. But this charming coastal town offers a peaceful getaway from the city and a whole different side of Thailand that you absolutely shouldn't miss out on!

What to do in Hua Hin

Visit lively markets and savor mouthwatering seafood with that signature spicy Thai kick, then make your way to Monsoon Valley Vineyard. Yes, you read that right! You'll be amazed to discover that this warm-climate region produces wine. You'll be sipping on fruity, medium-bodied vino and wondering why you didn't discover this place sooner.

Not only do they offer a taste of refined Thai wines, but you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery that offers breathtaking panoramic views of rolling hills. And if you visit in the late afternoon, you might just catch the most picturesque sunset over the vineyard's landscape.

Cycling has become a popular local activity, so take advantage of the well-maintained paths, grab a bike and cycle along the coast, through the small town of Pranburi to the magnificent Sam Roi Yot National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

As you pedal through quaint villages, you'll pass by smallholding farms and spot farmers tending to their fruit and vegetable crops, giving you a glimpse of Thailand's rural heart - it's warm people and their seemingly simple lifestyles.

Sam Roi Yot National Park is home to Thailand’s biggest freshwater wetlands. In the park, mountains line the horizon and colorful birds flit through the trees. One of Sam Roi Yot’s biggest draws is Phraya Nakhon Cave, a sacred site that features a Buddhist shrine in the glow of sunlight that filters through a perfectly positioned hole in a cliff. Hiking from the beach up through the jungle to the cave makes the experience even more magical.

And what better way to end the day's activities than with a late lunch right on the beach?

How to get to Hua Hin

You can travel from Bangkok to Hua Hin by bus, train, van or private taxi

If you're up for a unique all-inclusive vacation, take a ride through our Bangkok to Phuket Bike Tour. A one-of-a-kind journey that's more about sight-'doing' than sightseeing.

1 Day in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Only about 100km from Hua Hin lies Prachuap Khiri Khan. A coastal town that is known for its Royal Thai Air Force base that was once invaded by the Japanese during WWII.

What to do in Prachuap Khiri Khan

One of the town's biggest attractions is its colony of Langur monkeys, a sight that's sure to delight nature enthusiasts. For the adventurous, a hike up the nearby mountain offers a rewarding challenge and panoramic views of the area. And if you're on our Thailand Self-guided Tour, our app will give you several recommendations for scenic spots along the ride from Pranburi.
Just a short ride from Prachuap Khiri Khan, you'll find the Waghor Aquarium, a great place to learn about and appreciate the local aquatic life.

Wrap up your day in Ban Krut, a tranquil beachside town known for its cozy guesthouses and hotels. It's the ideal spot to relax and unwind after an exciting day of riding and exploring.

You can travel from Hua Hin to Bang Saphan Noi by train, van or private taxi. But on a Grasshopper Adventures self-guided tour, you'll get there by bike passing through beautiful landscapes where you'll have towering limestone karsts off to your right and the sea to your left

2 Days in Bang Saphan Noi

Things to Do in Bang Saphan Noi

Here in Bang Saphan Noi, the beaches are as pristine as they get - you might just catch yourself greeting the sun as you take a morning stroll along an almost empty beach.

And if you're a seafood fanatic, well, let's just say you're about to be very, very happy.

If the weather allows, you can embark on a short 20-minute journey to Koh Talu Island. The island is known for its lush natural life, both on land and underwater. If conditions are right, you'll be amazed by the variety and vibrancy of the fish species visible in the clear waters surrounding the island.

2 Days in Khao Sok

Tucked away in the Southern region of Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is a must-visit, providing an unparalleled glimpse into the untamed landscapes of Thailand. It's characterized by lush, dense jungles, soaring limestone formations, and abundant wildlife.

Khao Sok is home to diverse species, including Asian elephants, Malayan sun bears, and over 180 bird species, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

What to do in Khao Sok

At Khao Sok, you have endless opportunities for new adventures. Start by visiting the awe-inspiring Rachaprapa Reservoir and Dam. It's more than just a marvel of engineering – it's a sight that'll make you go "Wow!"

Another great way to make the most of your visit is to explore the river by kayak. Paddle down the Sok river as you’re guided gently onwards by the current. Because you’re headed downstream, you can conserve your energy and keep your eye out for bright Kingfishers and shimmering fish along the way.

Take a leisurely canoe trip down the tranquil Sok River and explore the lush forests and towering limestone karsts at your own pace. Keep those eyes peeled – if you're lucky, you might spot some of the park's enchanting wildlife.

Khao Sok offers a buffet of activities ranging from a cooking class (here's your chance to impress folks back home with your culinary skills) to a jungle trek, and a chance to float down a river on a bamboo raft.

Or, if you're feeling adventurous, join a night safari and experience the forest in a whole new light – or lack thereof!
