Overview

In the Delta, the Mekong nears the end of its 4900 kilometer journey from Tibet. The river branches into hundreds of rivulets in the Delta creating some of the most fertile soil in Southeast Asia and a flat landscape ideal for biking.

As your guide takes you weaving through the canal trails and orchard paths, across ferries that sometimes only fit half a dozen people, and into the charming villages and towns that this area is known for, you can leave the worries and cares of the big city behind.

As much an eating tour as a biking tour, the fresh farm-to-table cuisine of this area will delight, as will your friendly, welcoming homestay hosts. Come and see why the Delta is truly the rice bowl of Vietnam.

Our homestay getaway is a great way to experience Vietnam and the Mekong Delta, and it’s all just a short drive from Saigon.

75 Km riding. This is a completely flat ride on back roads and trails. We spend minimal time if any on anything resembling a main road, so there is rarely any traffic at all. The road is generally a mix of sealed or hard-packed dirt. At times it can be uneven and bumpy, but perfectly achievable if you are confident with your balance on a bike.

Highlights

Pedal flat roads and canal paths with stops to sample locally grown fruit and speak to friendly locals.

Spend the night in a local homestay for a cultural immersion and help make dinner and pick vegetables from the garden.

Visit a local floating market and explore this fascinating snapshot of local life.

Devour tasty, fresh Vietnamese food in the ‘food bowl’ of the country.

Day to Day

Riding:
45km

Depart Saigon early morning by private van for the 90 km drive to the town of Ben Tre, capital city of the most picturesque province in the Mekong Delta region.
Our cycling route sets out along easy, flat roads and continues on shady canal paths and quiet back roads, stopping along the way to learn about the region, sample many of the fresh fruits, and share hellos with the friendly villagers of the Delta. The Mekong has countless channels and streams and thanks to the many ferry boats, we can explore a wide area of the region. After crossing one of the larger tributaries, we visit a brick kiln and then it’s a short ride to lunch.

A tasty local lunch is served in a delightful restaurant. In the afternoon, we transfer by van and private boat, before arriving at the home of our hosts. There is time to relax and unwind, walk through of the village area near our homestay or select vegetables from the garden for dinner.

Dinner is home grown and you’re invited to assist in preparation, or just relax in a hammock. Meals: LD

Riding:
30km

We set off early this morning by boat to experience a small, but truly authentic floating market for which this area has become quite well known. After taking some time to experience this explosion of color and activity, we return to the house for home-cooked breakfast including local fruits and specially prepared foods.

After packing up we jump back on our bikes to explore more of the lovely canal paths where the only traffic is an occasional motor scooter or pedestrian.

Lunch is again at a local cafe and in mid afternoon our van takes us back to Saigon and to your hotel. Meals: BL

This is a completely flat ride on back roads and trails. We spend minimal time if any on anything resembling a main road, so there is rarely any traffic at all. The road is generally a mix of packed or hard-packed dirt. At times it can be uneven and bumpy, but perfectly achievable if you are confident with your balance on a bike. The fitness requirement on this tour is not high due to the lack of hills, short distances and relaxed pace. In the Mekong Delta, we are on narrow bike and pedestrian style paths and trails where the support vehicle cannot follow. It will however, meet us at intervals of 10 km or so and can meet us at closer intervals if there is an urgent need.

The south of Vietnam experiences the regular Southeast Asian monsoon between June and October, with dry sunny weather from November to April. December and January are the coolest months with temperatures rising during April and May leading to the onset of the rains.
