GRASSHOPPER ADVENTURES

Indochina Adventure

Bike tour in Laos & Cambodia | 25 days Bangkok to Phnom Penh | US$3,450
Mekong River cruise - Luang Prabang - limestone mountains - Vientiane - Angkor Wat - Phnom Penh - Southern Cambodia

Mountainous Laos and flat Cambodia are very different landscapes but both offer great South East Asian cycling experiences. In 2006 we are combining two of our most popular trips "Lao Lao" and "Karma Cambodia" to create the amazing Indochina Adventure. Ride from Luang Prabang to Vientiane in Laos and then experience the amazing Angkor Wat and Cambodian countryside on this incredible journey.

The cycling on this trip is spectacular. In Laos we climb into the limestone mountains and then descend for a number of days through H'Mong villages to Vang Vieng, a travellers hangout town, on then onto the (not so) bustling capital Vientiane.

In Cambodia cycle around the justifiably famous Angkor Kingdom ruins and then follow the south highways through Phnom Penh and down to the relaxing Cambodian coastal beaches.

Itinerary
Days 1 | Chiang Khong
Meeting at the Bangkok airport we take a short flight to Chiang Rai in the far north and drive out to our rustic wooden guesthouse that sits on the banks of the Mekong River, looking out onto Laos.
Day 2 | Mekong River
After crossing the border we spend the day cruising down the wonderful Mekong River, over nighting in Pak Beng. This is the perfect relaxing introduction to laid back Laos.
Days 3-5 | Cycling to Luang Prabang
Our first section of riding takes us along one of the quietest sealed roads in Asia, over a mountain pass, and crusing alongside a river on our way to Luang Prabang.
Days 6-7 | Luang Prabang
You won't want to leave this charming town. Our first day is yours to wander the temples, visit the King's Palace or just relax. The second day will be spent on a ride exploring the local region, wildlife and a waterfall that makes for a perfect place to swim.
Days 8-12 | Cycling to Vientiane
We depart Luang Prabang and take four days to cycle to the Lao capital Vientiane. The first day is the most challenging as we climb up into the mountains but the rewards are unforgettable, mountains all around with small villages clinging to their sides. In Vang Vieng we will have a free afternoon to explore the caves or tube on the river. Our final day of ridingin Laos brings us to Vientiane, probably the quietest city in Asia.
Days 13-16 | Siem Reap
After flying into Siem Reap you'll have three days to explore the wonders of the ancient Angkor Kingdom by the best way possible...bicycle.
Day 18 | Kompong Cham
We travel to this provincial capital first by road and then by bike on some of Cambodia's beautiful back roads.
Days 19-20 | Phnom Penh
One of the most picturesque cycling days, we ride along dirt roads by the Mekong River which takes us to the nation's capital. We will visit the S21 prison and have time to cruise around this charming city. Cycle 63km.
Day 21 | Takeo
Turning south, we pay an early morning visit to the infamous Killing Fields before continuing on to the small lake side town of Takeo. Cycle 83km.
Day 22 | Kampot
Another day in the saddle brings us to charming Kampot which sits between rivers and mountains and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy an old colonial town. Cycle 85km.
Days 23-24 | Sihanouokville
It's coastline riding for our last day on the bikes, cycling under the gaze of the Elephant Mountains. We stay for a day in the coastal resort town of Sihanoukville for a well earned beach-side rest. Cycle 104km.
Days 25-26 | Phnom Penh
Transfer back to Phnom Penh for our last night celebration dinner and the end of a lot of cycling!

Feedback and Reviews
"This is everything I had hoped for and more!!!!!  I would this experience as 10 / 10. The trip was a great combination of boating, train and rest days. Seeing Laos and Cambodia by bicycle is the only way to go."
