Cruise down the mighty Mekong River in Laos
Cruising down the the Mekong River in Laos is one of life's great treats and one of the most relaxing ways to enter this extremely relaxing country. If you are looking for a way to Luang Prabang that takes a little longer and avoids another boring flight this is the way to go. We can't recommend this trip highly enough.

Itinerary
Day 1 | Huay Xai to Pak Beng
The Luang Say riverboat leaves Huay Xai pier at 9am to begin the cruise down the Mekong to Pak Beng. En route one stop is made to observe the rural life of the river tribes along the Mekong. There is a buffet lunch on board. Arrival in Pakbeng is before sunset and you'll overnight at the Luang Say Lodge in a beautiful bungalow on the slopes of the river bank. Dinner is held on the terrace, overlooking the Mekong.
Day 2 | Pak Beng to Luang Prabang
If you are up early is is worth walking up to the local market where people from the surrounding villages come to buy and sell for their daily supplies. After breakfast at the lodge you'll board the boat for the second leg of the cruise. A short stop is made to visit a hill tribe village where you can watch the traditional process of Lao whiskey production before a buffet lunch on board. Continuing to Pak Ou village at the mouth of the Nam Ou River, you visit the Tam Ting “Caves of a Thousand Buddha’s”. Arrival at Luang Prabang is before sunset.
